Maybe it's because The Jam's original version is so amazing, but I've always strongly disliked Mozzer's take on this classic. I usually love his lyrical alterations but in this case - mixing up the verses and changing the last line to "A kick in the balls is all that you get in the name of entertainment" - they really grate on me. Musically, it's completely uninspired as well. His worst ever cover - yes, worse than "Golden Lights," "Work Is A Four-Letter Word," or "Redondo Beach"! 5

Thank You Morrissey for introducing me to The Jam...

Yes, it's not nearly as good as the original...what cover ever is? Unless the original sucked of course....

It was much better when performed live, complete with the Guitar smashing....what happenned to you, Boz?? You've mellowed!!!!

Am I going to be the only one who prefers this to the original? Well anyway, an excellent cover, and while the live version seems to get the most attention and the studio version largely overlooked (Morrissey himself said his cover was bad, so assume he means he didn't like the mellow studio take because he seemed to enjoy it live) I find them equally good. As a cover I must rank it a little lower, but both versions sound great regardless of who wrote it.

A 6 but mostly cuz it's a cover. I like that he covers it -well- and love the original Jam version. I remembered he played this in '91 at the World Music Theater (IL) and I was so damn happy :) and had a clove cig in hand at the time :p

Great line 'splattered walls and a kick in the balls is all that you get in the name of entertainment'.

Well, most of Morrissey's covers are better than the original, with the exception of "Redondo Beach," "Trash," and this one.

I did say....."Unless the original version sucked to begin with"... I was mainly refering to covers in general...what I really hate is when people like The Lemonheads use other people's material to "make it"

and no, Moon River is not the best version ever recorded....

As a huge Jam fan,i say Morrissey's version is MUCH better.
His styling give it some emotional depth lacking in the original

It's definitely better than the original though!

best and me favourite cover Morrissey played live [1991] it rocked
the roof of the building. a true kick in the balls [check the lyrics]

I'm not going to write anything about the killer/exellent lyrics, cause
they're Pual Weller's

overall a good choice for a cover, and it suited Morrissey fine, he should
do it again

[damn its the day after, and I checked the votes, and it said I didnt vote, but
gave it the big 9 it deseved]

6/10. Hard to improve on the original.

im no fan of the jam however their original version of this is fantastic. unfortunately moz's version doesn't hold a candle to it:(

Great version. Morrissey brought a different feel to the song, which is what a good cover version should do.

But it's not as good as The Jam's take.

You are not quite right about the lyrics. Morrissey did made excellent changes, f.ex., as I also pointed out somewhere else, the condensation of the whole strophe into one single line 'wake up 6 AM and think about your holidays'. All in all, a good cover. 9.

thanks for that info 'discolate my shoulder' , didn't know that

but I'm mistaken a lot lately, I really think the coma in march 2006 done
more damage than I thought...yesterday it was about the Libertines...
etcetera, etcetera
