Such a majestic song and surely one of the greatest cover versions by The Moz. I think it has even more meaning because it was written by his dear friend James, and you can see that James was either heavily influenced by his friend Steven, or Steven and James have a common style. The music is great, the lyrics are great, and the vocals are great - what more could you possibly want? T.E.N.

I love it!

I know it's a cover version but I think that if Moz had released this as an A-side then it would have been a hit.

10 from me.

A 10 from me.I love both the studio and live version from Who Put The M...

Does anybody have the original I've looked everywhere but can't find it?

I gave it a 9. Great song, the best cover he's done. (And a BIG improvement over the original)

just another b side i have, that isn't played very much.

I like it a lot; its a great song and Moz sings it with a definate passion.

Hiroshima...(Come Come Nuclear Bomb!)

Best Morrissey Cover EVER

Just absolutely brillaint...you would think Morrissey wrote it

Prolly my favourite cover ever; I would've given it a 10 except that it's not actually a Moz choon. So I gave it a 9.

James Maker sounds similar to an early Smiths era Moz :)

PS What does the "Hiroshima, yes yes yes!" lyric mean??

From http://passionsjustlikemine.com :

Note:
This song was first performed by the band Raymonde and Morrissey remained relatively faithful to the original lyrics. Besides a few minor preposition changes, he modified the following bits:
-he removed the 'darling' in "And I, darling, dim next to you"
-he turned the original line "I'll be Einstein or Frankenstein" into a question
-he welcomed Hiroshima while in the original version James Maker sang "Hiroshima, no thanks!"

Quote:

Morrissey, in a Q&A session on True To You in June 2007: "'No One Can Hold a Candle to You' was originally written and sung by James Maker, and we've been good friends now for 30 years. He released 'Born that Way' a couple of years back and that's one of my favorite recordings of all time."

I love it, I'd give a 10 if not a cover but I think an 8 is fair.

one of, if not the, best cover(s) he's ever done. the melody is very different for him so it makes me smile. drinking.

Interestingly enough, this song is outperforming every other b-side of the Quarry-era and most of the album tracks as well.
Looks like most of us agree that it should have been on the album then.

The next one then, another song that definitely should have been on the album...
