The Most Obscure Band That I Keep Remembering from the late 80's early 90's

I wouldn't say the House Of Love were an obscure band. Certainly not in the U.K were they were seen by many to be the natutal heirs to The Smiths throne.

I think they were a criminally overlooked band.Their debut album "The House Of Love" was a superb album and 1990's "Fontana" gave them a Top 10 UK album and shifted a healthy 400,000 copies on the Creation label.

The mainstays of the band were Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers and they had,at best,a tempestuous relationship.

When the band split Chadiwck formed the short lived The Maddonas and rumours abounded that his creativity was hampered somewhat by an ongoing alcohol battle.

He emerged from the shadows in the late 90's to deliver an acclaimed solo offering "Lazy,soft and slow" and I had the pleasure of talking to the man at an open air gig at Jesus Green in Cambridge not log after the albums release.

Since then very little has emerged.Chadwick was rumoured to be nearing completion of a 2nd solo album but in March this year he and Bickers were rumoured to have repaired their long running rift and were back writing songs.

Perhaps the story has moved on from here I am not sure.

There is a "Best of Collection" out there and also some Peel sessions but for me the 1st album was the highlight.

Thank You. I posted the first comment in this thread. I bought the debut album on the strength of a couple songs that were played on alternative radio in Los Angeles. This was probably right around the time I purchased Viva Hate, and had either just gotten into Morrissey or was just about to. I had no idea, being here in the USA, that they were actually considered the potential heirs to the Smiths' Throne. I remember that first album it seems daily...and though the record collection of my youth is long gone, I should go pick up that first CD this week.

My mates band supported the House Of Love in a run down pub in backstreet docks near Gravesend.

A greatly missed band. Guy Chadwick was pretty talented.

I stood next to Guy Chadwick when I saw the Stone Roses before they were big. Now if only I could form a band we could make a sequel to 24 Hour Party People!

For me the best track the H.o.L ever did was 'Destroy the Heart'. They could never get a hit single with the word 'destroy' in it though. Am I allowed to say that G.C's lyrics 'sucked'. Phew, I think I got away with it.

The House of Love's lyrics did not "suck." They were okay, sometimes even pretty good. Compared to the Smiths, even the Beatles lyrics sucked.

That wasn't an Etch-A-Sketch Pat but I know what you mean. It was a silver screen and you turned two knobs(oh err) and made horizontal and vertical lines and if you twiddled both at once (fnarr fnarr) you could do squiggly lines.
