The Jam

is this the same paul weller who wouldnt speak to you if you were scottish when they were doing top of the pops and thats coming from jim kerr of simple minds.good songwriter but not much of a singer.
I’ve lived here for 15 years and even I try not to speak to the locals. And even when I do, they’re very hard to understand.

I’ve written that merch off. Lesson learned.
Just outside Arbroath but in Aberdeen, Dundee or St Andrews for work mostly, so I’ve not picked the best accent to surround myself with.

I had a natural predilection to dislike the English long before I moved to Scotland.
But I don’t really dislike them anymore. They’re just odd.

Unintentionally funny lyrics

One of their best deep cuts

Their best single , for me

The same Weller that was really shy and nervous when they first met and Jim Kerr has since said that he supported them later so things were good between them.

So many great songs, don't think i would ever be able to come up with a top 10.

I rate them as the greatest band, but i also love the Style Council just as much.

Sound Affects is my favourite album.

The Jam were one of the best bands of all time. No question.

From The Jam play some pretty decent venues, I'm going to the Ritz in April next year to see them on their Beat Surrender tour with Buzzcocks supporting them.

Anyone not familiar with them should start with Snap, the singles collection, or Extras, the outtakes and b-sides/non album cuts collection. Both are flawless and provide excellent overviews of the band's career.

Best studio album, arguably, is Setting Sons. Absolutely incredible.

Best songs-

The Butterfly Collector
Saturday's Kids
It's Too Bad
Man in The Corner Shop
The Eton Rifles
Thick As Thieves
Away From The Numbers
Carnation
Just Who Is The Five O'Clock Hero
Liza Radley
Dreams OF Children
Tales From The Riverbank
Going Undergound
When You're Young
Private Hell
Boy About Town
Burning Sky
The Bitterest Pill I Ever Had To Swallow

Sound Affects for me.
Some amazing stuff on there; prefer it to Snap!, surprisingly.

It's excellent, no question about it. Really can't go wrong with that band no matter where you jump in, especially after that debut album which was pretty much just quintessential British punk. Still a great record but nowhere near indicative of the leaps and bounds they'd accomplish with each subsequent release.

I thought I was the only one!

As far as I know, we don’t have a thread about The Jam, one of greatest British bands of all time. The Jam were active between 77-83, and then handed over the proverbial baton to The Smiths. I’ve always found that very interesting, seeing as both are considered extremely English and both bands are known for crafting acutely authentic portrayals of English (working class) culture.

Anyway. Let’s discuss The Jam.

In my book, these are their ten best songs:
1. Private Hell
2. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight
3. That’s Entertainment
4. Tales from the Riverbank
5. Eton Rifles
6. Strange Town
7. The Bitterest Pill
8. Burning Sky
9. Town Called Malice
10. English Rose
I'm with you all the way .
Its funny people foget how huge The Jam were.
Paul is a bit of a genius, I think.

There are those who think they are better than the smiths .

To me they aren't but I think that's just me being subjective
Objectively I guess in England there is reason a strong argument why The Jam are better .

They were way more popular than Smiths .
They were as influential
In fact the Smiths , were fans . M being a fanboy

Smiths in some ways were just a more Catholic Irish version of the band .
With Johnny taking over guitar duties and M doing voice and words.
Like Paul, M picked and pulled from Kinks idea book.
They keyed into Ray Davis in different ways .

I think Paul ended up being a more rounded male.
. Not cause he has kids etc just because he seemed to embrace life more and he loved
The Jam were the shit

Definitely one of there best and a good example on how to tell a story in a song:

The distant echo -
of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
the ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps - repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrapers and this morning's paper
Mr. Jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
I fumble for change - and pull out the Queen
Smiling, beguiling
I put in the money and pull out a plum
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
"Hey boy" they shout - "have you got any money?"
And I said - "I've a little money and a take away curry,
I'm on my way home to my wife.
She'll be lining up the cutlery,
You know she's expecting me
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork"
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in its own existence
It blended in with the weather
It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth
It blocked all my senses
Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight
The last thing that I saw
As I lay there on the floor
Was "Jesus Saves" painted by an atheist nutter
And a British Rail poster read "Have an Awayday - a cheap holiday -
Do it today!"
I glanced back on my life
And thought about my wife
'Cause they took the keys - and she'll think it's me
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry's gone cold
I'm down in the tube station at midnight
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight
This song in words and sound is sublime
Also Carnation, Tales From The Riverbank
