The Headmaster Ritual different vocal on TV show

Just watched The Smiths performing The Headmaster Ritual on the Oxford Road Show from '85 and the pre-recorded version they are miming to has a different vocal to the version released. I found that a bit odd. Wasn't there some BBC rule that bands had to re-record songs for TV shows?

They performed THR and Shakespeare's Sister, and both seem to be alternative mixes. Not sure why, though. The BBC did at one time have a policy of asking bands to re-record for mimed performances, but I think that was a thing of the past by 1985.

Yes I think it was and the artists usually just changed something minimallly. The Headmaster Ritual is definitely a different vocal. The phrasing in the first line is different. Why does this interest me so much ha ha?
