Young & Beautiful

I love it. Only the French know how to make such films about la sexualité innocence.
Great idea of having Charlotte Rampling, looking like Anne Bancroft, giving absolution to the young woman at the end, so that she eventually turns into a female Graduate for the 21st century.
10/10

1961 Mother Joan of the Angels

A story of exorcism in a monastery.
Pretty cinematography, especially when it"s focussing on the cute nuns possessed by all sorts of devils in their shiny habits.
Message: Love means that you invite Satan to possess you, so that he keeps his claws off the beloved, who then can become a saint.
Problem: you might end up on the stake.

i dont have anything to watch movies on anymore (they become glitchy and fuzzy on my computer) so i havent been watching any, sadly. i did want to watch this one at one point, but couldnt find it anywhere. where did you get manage to find it? also, have you seen black narcissus? it's also about a gaggle of nuns who go a bit mental and is pretty good, if you like technicolor.

it's running on mubi france, i think, or mubi italy.
I love nun films. Can't remember having seen black narcissus.
Mubi's also showing the anna karina nun film, la religieuse, from 1966.

well if you like nun films you should watch black narcissus!! there's another one called 'the innocents' that i saw a few years ago but i cant remember if i liked it or not.

saying that you love nun films reminds me of how i love priest films (only there arent enough of them that i know of!). i love robert bressons 'diary of a country priest'. his film style is perfectly suited to showing the daily life of a priest.

Can you watch movies on YT?

Priest films are a heck of a genre. Can't get enough of them. "The daily life of a priest" sounds so very exciting.
Oh my gosh, do you remember the Thorn Birds on TV back in the 80s?

Watching these scenes again, I must say that Richard Chamberlain did a great job not making his character look like a perv. Twas probably not that easy.

If I don't fall asleep early today, I'm gonna watch this film from Vietnam

Was falling asleep over and over again while watching this here:

The reasons for people's endevours remain in the dark. Enjoyed the Brazilian scenery though.

Isn't this just the most amazing story?

Beautiful documentary about two fans' investigation into their musical hero's whereabouts. So why did this guy have to spend his life in oblivion?
The more squalid your surroundings, the more intense the beauty of your inner life can glow. And he seemed to be completely fine with that. Probably drugs played a role as well, and knowing that he wouldn't be able to withstand all the offers if fame eventually set in.
Great voice, great lyrics. Sounds a bit like Donovan.

Spending end-of-the-world hot days indoors ( thank God I'm not working)? Why not launch into a 3 hour long film about a girl with multiple personalities? Why not indeed! That sounds fun!

Only problem is, you wonder if the little girl in the film wasn't left traumatized after what they made her do...

You two may want to check out Ken Russell's film The Devils (1971).

“In 17th-century France, Father Grandier (Oliver Reed) is a priest whose unorthodox views on sex and religion influence a passionate following of nuns, including the sexually obsessed Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave). When the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu (Christopher Logue) realizes he must eliminate Grandier to gain control of France, Richelieu portrays Grandier as a satanist and spearheads a public outcry to destroy the once-loved priest's reputation.”

A good time was had by all ! :lbf:

It's easily my fav of all Ozon filmography (I recommend also "Summer of 85"). I watched "Young and beautiful" at the teather.

Summer of 85 is now on my watch-list. I have seen "Under the Sand" and "The Swimming Pool", and both are superb. Under the Sand is actually quite thrilling.

corny picture, but a nice lookin chap.

Another Nun Film. Benedetta by Paul Verhoeven from 2021
Again with a fabulous Charlotte Rampling

Takes place in a nun's monastery in 17th century Tuscany, during a plague epidemic.

Benedetta is a 2021 biographical psychological drama film directed and co-written by Paul Verhoeven, starring Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun in the 17th century who joins an Italian convent and has a lesbian love affair with another nun. (Wikip.)

Great dramaturgy and acting.
I find it discomforting when older directors explicitly and voyeuristically depict female sexuality, or what they imagine it to be in their head game. Usually the women behave like horny men, going for it when- and whereever they can. In addition, these novice nuns look like playboy bunnies.
Anyways, story is interesting, especially when it shows how strong people's imagination in modern early times still was, and how strongly their perception was still influenced by their imagination, despite all Enlightenment efforts.
it was a turning point in history. Nowadays, it seems, we witness a backward movement.

Owo, you have a really good taste. I did love Benedetta and I guess this one and Elle are Verhoeven's best movies ever.

I watched Boogie Nights again. It’s entertaining and I wanted something I already knew in case I fell asleep. I would kind of like to watch all Burt Reynolds’ movies. I think of him as a cheesy, dated movie star more than an actor but he is great in that. The other two older guys that play sleazy porn producers are also great at being creepy and menacing.

It’s a pretty dark movie but you can also see it as an ironic comedy. I love the music selections in it. Worth a try if you have Netflix and you are curious.

Seems there is a new series of "Nunsploitation" movies being launched on mubi.

Nigel Wingrove's "Visions of Ecstacy"
The above-mentioned "Mother Joan of the Angels"
And from July 25th, Sergio Grieco's "The Sinful Nuns of St. Valentine"

I'm surprised that they don't have "Benedetta" in this list, but probably they don't want to push this relatively new film by a star director into the splatter nunsploitation genre.

I don't have a streaming or delivery subscription at the moment, having cancelled Netflix some months ago, but the selections mentioned here make MUBI look compelling. I guess I'll have to decide between that and the Criterion Channel.
