My favorite is from (the astronomically underrated) Harvey Danger.

In the song "Meetings With Remarkable Men" there is a line

"I bow before the avatar, he said the problem's clear to me, you never got over morrissey."

and in the song "Pike St/Park Slope" he mentions we hate it when our friends become successful

I love the subtle moz worship, post some goodies

Art Brut's "Moving To L.A."

Art Brut's song, "Moving To L.A.," mentions Morrissey; see below:

Lyrics to Moving To L.A. :
There's not much glam about the English weather
There's nothing left keeping us together
Sunshine on a rainy day
Makes me want to move away
I think I've got it sorted
I'm going to get myself deported
I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)
(x3)

Hang around with Axl Rose
Buy myself some brand new clothes
Everything is gonna be just fine
I hear the murder rate is in decline
Get me a southern accent
Maybe grab a piece of action

I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)
(x3)

When I get off the plane
The first thing I'm gonna do is
Strip naked to the waist
And ride my Harley Davidson
Up and down Sunset street
I may even get a tattoo
My problems are never gonna find me
I'm not sending one letter
or even a postcard back
I'm drinking Henessey
With Morrissey

On a beach
Out of reach
Somewhere very far away

I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)

Frank Turner - Reasons not to be an idiot

You're not as messed up as you think you are
Your self-absorption makes you messier
Just settle down and you will feel a whole lot better
Deep down you're just like everybody else

She's not as pretty as she thinks she is
Just picture her after she's had kids
I bet she sits at home and listens to The Smiths
Deep down she's just like everybody else

" I've been walking in the rain just to get wet on purpose"

Always makes me smile..

Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill

The Sex Pistols - Just a band.
The Clash - Just a band.

Minor Threat - Just a band.
The Cure - Just a band.
The Smiths - Just a band.
Nirvana - Just a band.
The Pixies - Just a band.

And okay, I know it's not highbrow culture or anything, but I love the Morrissey mention in this 'song'..at 1.18

I quite like The Bobby McGees' 'I've got no friends' - something like this as I remember...

'We'll share one drink all night/and dance to the Smiths/but I'll still be walking home on my own'

quote: morrissey/smiths coverversion tributes, refernces and parodies site on passions.this section seems to be gone?[/QUOTE]

Yeah sorry, the section had to go. Morrissey has become a cultural icon and every week now I was getting emails from people letting me know about songs mentioning him, or quoting a lyric, etc. The section was getting huge, and it's not the most interesting or visited section of the webpage, so I had to drop it. With all the new releases, tour dates, radio and tv interviews, magazine interviews, it can get overwhelming.

If someone wants the last version of the list to host it somewhere else and maintain it, just pick it up at

The Courteeners did the song 'Smiths Disco' and in 'What took you so long' includes the line 'you're like Morrissey without strings'

wow, so awesome to see harvey danger mentioned around here, and better yet, the correct assertion that they are astronomically underrated! pike st/park slope is one of my absolute favs.

The Mountain Goats song called 'Anti-Music Song'

"I saw you on TV
doing a bad imitation of Van Morrison
and I saw you on TV
doing a bad imitation of a second rate songwriter from the eighties named Morrissey (pronounced 'More-EE-see'
I never liked Morrissey
and I don't like you.

I saw you TV,
doing an imitation of an imitation of Jimi Hendrix
that's really pathetic
and I saw you on TV
trying to figure out what Brian Jones would be like if he'd have lived 'til today
I can tell you myself
he'd be like Brian Wilson
I don't like Brian Wilson
and I don't like you
I don't like you."

Turn it Up by Robots in Disguise

I woke up weak today and needing your voice
Crawled into the speakers and turned up the volume
Felt so sick today but cured by your noise
My head in the speakers is drowning out volumes

In "Ashes To Ashes" I'm falling falling
In "Ashes To Ashes" I'm losing losing
In "Curl" and "Grazes" I'm feeling feeling
In "Curl" and "Grazes" I'm losing losing

Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn me on

I dress up bright tonight and needing the beat
Dance into the speakers and max up the volume
Feel so high tonight and moved by my feet
My heart in the speakers is loving the volume

In "Pretty Vacant" I'm jumping jumping
In "Pretty Vacant" I'm moving moving
In "Teaches Of Peaches" I'm speeding speeding
In "Teaches Of Peaches" I'm moving moving

Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn me on

In "Delia's Gone" "I'll Keep It With Mine" "Birdland" "Clouds"
In "Sous Le Soleil Exactement" "Sunshine Superman" "I Want You" "Ghosts"
In "Some Velvet Morning" "Paper Wings" "Virginia Avenue" "Laura"
In "Summer's Almost Over" "I Walk the Line" "A Night Like This" "Strange Fruit"

In "Hatful Of Hollow" I'm diving diving
In "Hatful Of Hollow" I'm screaming screaming

In "Boys" and "Voodoo" I'm living living
In "Boys" and "Voodoo" I'm screaming screaming

Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn me on!

Owen "In The Morning Before Work"

I eat with these crooked teeth
Tomato soup and grilled cheese
But you already know that because you used to dine with me
Do you remember?

I listen to my same old cd's
New order & Morrissey

But you already know that because you used to ride with me
I thought i'd be singing a different tune by now
But this song about you keeps coming out

I sleep in these dirty sheets
A blanket between my boney knees
But you already know that because you used to crawl in bed with me in the morning before work

Put your hands on my back
Kiss the back of my neck

I thought i'd be singing a different tune by now
But this song about you keeps coming out
I hoped to be singing to someone new by now
But the songs about you

amen, being on mtv ruined them forever, no one wants to give them another chance after that 1-hit wonder

yet, they have amazing songs, with some moz caliber lyrics in terms of wit, and intelligence

and doesnt owen reference a few moz related songs. like "that tattoo isn't funny anymore" I think he quotes the "too close to home/too near the bone" line

Wow, no Dead Milkmen yet?

"Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)"

You'll dance to anything
You'll dance to anything

Okay, look at you
Don't you look like Siouxsie Sioux
How long did it take to get that way
What a terrible waste of energy
You wear black clothes say you're poetic
The sad truth is you're just pathetic
Get into the groove get out of my way
I came here to drink not to get laid
So why don't you just go on home
If you want to moan you'll have to moan alone
You'll dance to anything...
You'll dance to anything...
Don't try to tell me that you're an intellectual
Cause you're just another boring bisexual
("I met Andy Warhol at a really chic party")
Blow it out your hairdoo cause you really work at Hardees
80 pounds of make up on your art school skin
80 points of I.Q. located within
Know what you are? You're a bunch of ...
Artfags! Artfags!
Choke on this you dance-a-teria types!

You'll dance to anything by the Communards
You'll dance to anything by Book of Love
You'll dance to anything by The Smiths
You'll dance to anything by De-peche Mode
You'll dance to anything by Public Image Limited
You'll dance to anything by Naked Truth
You'll dance to anything by any bunch of stupid Europeans who come over
here with their big hairdoos bent on taking OUR money instead of giving
your cash, where it belongs, to a decent American artist like myself!
You'll dance to anything!

Johnny Dangerously (John Bramwell from 'I Am Kloot') had a song 'Subway Life' in 1988 with a lyric

And I look to your principles,
you vote for the Queen
tell me what the hell
is that supposed to mean?

The second verse it had a bit of a twist

And I look to your principles,
you vote for James Dean
tell me what the hell
is that supposed to mean?

Wonder who he was singing about:thumb:
