Spiked: "The fire in Morrissey" (December 31, 2022)

The fire in Morrissey now

Hi,being a dinosaur, I can't transfer a article from the Spiked website, if someone can help please. It's a good read.

Link added and additional note posted by BrummieBoy:

Michael Collins is a writer, journalist and broadcaster. He is the author of The Likes Of Us: A Biography of the White Working Class.

This essay was originally published in Arena HOMME+.

The link is in the Strange thread - will add to yours above.
Regards,
FWD.

I don't like it tbh - he didn't drape himself in the Union Jack while singing the National Front Disco... he hasn't become a Tory... all the article is doing is putting a positive spin on false allegations.

The writer does at least indicate he's quoting others about allegations: he sure goes on!

I'd suspect him of acting under the defense mechanism of reaction formation, as I believe many music journalists suffer when it comes to Morrissey, except that his scope is quite wide and actually shows a lot of affection, from my reading.

Spiked magazine doesn't seem to be easy to categorise at all, as regards political leanings - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiked_(magazine)

They're Marxists infiltrating the Establishment via right-wing culture wars.

I'd rather they didn't use Morrissey as cannon fodder - it doesn't help his particular situation.

So this is the Arena Homme article that was publicised earlier?

I'm not sure that paragraph is either real or means anything either. Brendan O Neil was a Marxist....that's one person.

It's a good article, describing many things about Moz and the state of modern England and it's past and indeed, our past. Probably the best piece about Moz in recent years.

The magazine used to be called Living Marxism & was started by a sect within the Socialist Workers Party.

Quoting me a piece from the Guardian? Come on. Whenever I've read a piece on Spiked, any "Marxist" agenda is like looking for a white Englishman in central London. Pretty bloody hard to find.

Yes , this writer is a wanker . It's good he is championing M but really he is just using M to mirror his own politics. Same with most of these right winger types .
Still it's awesome M has some good press

Some of us raised the needle from the groove before it reached songs about meat eaters and Mrs Thatcher.” Then you skipped the songs about his ethics and politics. You don’t understand him.

What do you think his politics are? I've got his book about the working class..it was well reviewed by all the broadsheets at the time and there's very little indication of what his politics are in the piece.
