In today's Guardian, Michael Eavis picks his top 5 Glastonbury performances. They are:

Radiohead (1997)
T-Rex (1970)
Oasis (1994)
John Martyn (1979)
The Smiths (1984)

About The Smiths' performance, Eavis says "We had no fence around the Pyramid, but it was the last year we could do that, because everybody climbed on stage and the band couldn't finish their set. I think they had a good time but Morrissey never admits to enjoying himself."

Pity Michael Eavis forgot about 1995 Pulp who replaced Stone Roses in last minute due to injury of John Squire.

he probably didn't forget them, just preferred these performances over that one.

I've heard Eavis say before that the Smiths saved Glastonbury, that their performance was a turning point in the history of the event.

I'm sure he said it was the best Glastonbury performance

ps - found some extra stuff
There's some stuff on BBC6 Music http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20090622_marr.shtml 'their appearance changed the face of the festival'.

They were talking about this on the 6music breakfast show this morning - they reckoned that the controversy of The Smiths playing Glastonbury was worse than the fuss about Jay-Z headlining last year. Up to that point it was a prog rock Hawkwind type affair and it was quite revolutionary of Eavis to book Moz n co...

p.s. Kewpie, Pulp replacing the Stone Roses is my personal Glastonbury highlight, the atmosphere was amazing!
