I'm trying to make a themed mixed CD. What would you say is the best Smiths/Morrissey politically based song? Thanks a bunch

well for your smith's choice you could go with the obvious queen is dead but that would be way too predictable. skip still ill and nowhere fast, and either put shoplifters of the world unite or panic.
and my morrissey solo pick, we'll let you know or the national front disco.

unless the only album you own is yatq....

Morrissey: 'Margaret on the Guillotine', 'Bengali in Platforms' or even 'He Knows I'd Love to See Him'.

As for The Smiths, I would avoid the obvious 'Queen is Dead' or 'Shoplifters...' in favour of something like 'I Want the One I can't Have': "A double bed/And a stalwart lover for sure/These are the riches of the poor", "A tough kid who sometimes swallows nails/Raised on Prisoner's Aid/ He killed a policeman when he was Thirteen/And somehow that really impressed Me..."

Understand?

On second thought, the psychosexualization of poverty and delinquency is perhaps TOO subtle a coherence for your theme.

The Lazy Sunbathers. An underrated gem, that one.

The Smiths: "Vicar in a Tutu" - He's not strange, he just wants to live his lfie this way!

Solo: "Billy Budd" & "The National Front Disco"

More generally, I love the language of individualism prevalant in so many of his songs. "I am MINE" from "Hated for Loving" is said in a thousand different ways throughout his body of work. I also like the increase in his attacks on coppers, taxmen, and people who try and siphon all his dough.

I bet in some little subtle unseen way all of the smiths/morrissey songs are political. similiar in the way that they are all about sex.

morrissey hates david tseng too, he's in good company, he sooooooed him lol

Don't forget "Glamorous Glue", "Irish Blood, English Heart", "Bengali In Platforms" and "Margaret On The Guillotine", to name just a few.

What's the difference between a political song and a social commentary?

I think Margaret on the Guillotine is more political than Bengali in Platforms. Maybe bengali in Platforms is much more of a social commentary?

Yes, I guess you're right.
