Ooh, just over the hill. Might pop in.

"S&J told me to buy some bowling shirts, turn up at a house near Fridays nightclub to get my hair cut, and that there was a strong possibility the band would project a gay image, more pretty boy than activist AKA Tom Robinson.
[...]
Im not judging or commenting on Stephens sexuality, Johny obviously isn’t gay, and Mike wasn’t on the scene yet. This has to be viewed in the context of a new band formation, where all sorts of ideas are placed on the table. At that time, the first single was going to be “boy for birthday”, and the band was going to have a gay identity. Weeks later it was never mentioned again."

Dodged a bullet there.
The simple fact is that he was used for his connection to the studio so the band could get free studio time. He could barely play the bass and mike said johnny had to show him where to put his fingers. He was a crap player, that's why they got rid of him.
Dodged what bullet?
If this is true, it only shows that Morrissey and Marr considered a number of strategic approaches to getting off the street/outta Dodge. Frankie Goes To Hollywood were very clear that uber-sex was a way to storm the citadel and Paul Morley sculpted that meme, just as Wotziname sculpted Morrissey's aesthetic persona once the transgenderqueer back-up dancer was ditched along with the heteronormative Hibbert.

The bullet of the Smiths targetting primarily the gay community while dressing as ten pin bowlers. A homonormative (to hijack one of your favourite words) style might well have seen the Smiths follow Tom Robinson and Frankie Goes To Hollywood into rapid chart obscurity. I doubt "I Want Boy For My Birthday" would have launched the Smiths in quite the same way as the less overt Hand In Glove, arse on the cover or not.
Thank you for the clarification.
FGTH 'rapid chart obscurity'? huh? Their 3 singles will never, ever be dated or surpassed. I am singing "The Power Of Love" as I write this, and tears are falling. How I would love to hear the blessed Morrissey sing that to his flock of sheeple, he could mash it up with "guts to be gentle and kind" thingy, like he did with auld lang's syne, but I guess the mob would sing along like that funny woman at a show in E'bro I caught. Moz had a hilarious tantrum and started ranting at her in a not very loving way......he was being profound and she was just drunk and into karaoke. Tom Robinson changed his mind when he fell in love with a cis-woman-born-woman and got married and had babies. He got loads of flack from the heterophobic gayz if I recall, just like wot Bowie did when he got tired of being blown by Jagger (allegedly) and decided to marry the most beautiful woman in the world, have a daughter and spend a decade looking after her rather than trolling round the world spouting nonsense and pretending to be depressed and wanting to die in the daytime but the rushing off to a private hospital at the merest sniffle, like someone else did. "relax, don't do it, when u wanna suck it, do it". How very rude, how very dare you Holly!
regards.
ps: the arse on the cover was art, not porno: so don't be smutty about 'genius icons' or suggest careerist opportunism as a tactic kept at one's elbow by 'Outsider' rebels. You're just jealous of Morrissey, like me. A bitter, angry never-was been trapped in Mom's basement eating Doritos and drinking Pepsi all day. Just like me.
that would have been pretty hard since Johnny was with Angie and I couldn't see Mike Joyce outing himself as gay since it's obvious he's straight and got a blokish "hard as nails" approach. I think Dale was kicked out myself.
according pasion just like mine,
The first two concerts were done as a 5-piece band, including Morrissey friend James Maker as dancer.
Dale Hibbert played bass for the first gig, Andy Rourke replaced him in between then and the second gig.
So by the third concert, the final classic line up of Morrissey, Johnny Marr (guitar), Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums) was fixed.
