The American was the first single released from Simple Minds' 1981 album Sons & Fascination. The album was the band's fourth but was the first released with Virgin Records after their split with Arista.

The album was released simultaneously with Simple Minds' fifth album Sister Feelings Call. Sister Feelings Call was also included with Sons & Fascination as a bonus disc with the first 10,000 copies of the original release. The apparent reason for having two single LPs was Virgin Records' reluctance to release all the material as a double LP. As a result, Sons And Fascination came out as the somewhat more coherent album, leaving Sister Feelings Call with tracks that were rejected for the main feature. Despite this policy, Sister Feelings Call may be viewed as a fully-fledged album or at least as the second disc in a double set.
When The American was released as a single in May of 1981 it stayed on the UK charts in the for 3 weeks only reaching #59.
