Your Favourite things to do in London? And NOT breaking the bank.

I don't mean "touristy" things......

1. Hamsptead Outdoor swimming Ponds: There are 3 bathing bonds in Hampstead: 1 mixed, 1 for men, 1 for women. And they are still free!!! The mens pond has the best water.

2. Fopp Record Shop in Covent Garden: DEAD cheap. Very very cheap Cds, DVDs & books. New stock every day. Most Morrissey CDs are £5 or even less.

3. Govinda's Restaurant: Hare Krishna restaurant on Soho Square. Beautiful vegetarian food for less than £10. The food is lovely and you can have loads of second helpings after a certain time. Their sweets are lovely too. Check the time for second helpings though.

4. ROUGH TRADE EAST. An Amazing record shop off Brick Lane. You just need to see it. The staff are out of this world. Any record you ever wanted, the staff will tell you about it!

5. 176 Bus. This is the 24 hour bus which takes you all the way through South London. It's a LIFE LINE.

6. Oyster Card. Get one NOW!

Shagging in the bushes on Hampstead Heath is free too. And you may even pull George Michael:thumb:

You saucy bastard! Well, there is that! Boy George also lives nearby. But honestly: The Hampstead swimming ponds are a "well kept secret"; they really are the only free swimming places in London.

Apparently they have been "bathing ponds" since 1860!

Now the City of London is trying to introduce a fee of £2 for swimming in the Hampstead ponds.

Surely some things should be free in this world???

This is my London.

1. Evening in the White Hart, near Aldgate East tube, followed by a squat party at rampArts social centre.

2. Critical Mass cycle ride, last Friday of the month, meet under Waterloo Bridge
and cycle around with soundsystems for 4 hours.

3. Urban Capture The Flag, in whatever corner of the city we're reclaiming that weekend.

4. Vegan fast food at Next Generation Gormet on Coptic St. Vegan chicken burgers for the win.

5. Have a street party surrounded by riot police outside the Bank of England.

After fifteen years absence, a flight to London at the 26th January 'o8 and the bad surprise of a cancelled show, my husband and I had a day to look around. It was our third time in London and we weren't in the mood for other "entertainment". We just walked the whole day through a lot of good record shops and near Soho we found a vintage magazine shop, with really old music (and other) magazines, but don't know the street,it was quite interesting. We went to Carnaby Street and were shocked, because it changed so much, i miss the good old times of Merc. Next day we had to leave but we came back in August and with more time and money to spent in London.
We tried to see all the places in London ever mentioned in a Morrissey/Smiths song and bought a few records. Away from the main streets there is so much to explore. London is so beautiful. I can't travel anywhere else.

Very true. Forget Oxford street, it is a right dump these days! Especially the bit running between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road. It's stating the obvious but London is always constantly changing: For example a lot of the nightlife used to be in Soho ("The West End") but a lot of that has gradually gravitated towards East London. Soho in fact is quite boring these days.

Again this is stating the obvious but there are so many large open green spaces in London: Hamsptead Heath (where George Michael can be found shagging :lbf:), Greenwich Park, Blackheath, Crystal Palace Park.....just to name a few.

I could go on but will shut up now.

Very fond memories of Spitalfields Market - Square Pie Shop - Wild Mushroom Pie http://www.squarepie.com/Spitalfields Pies, that are square. It shouldn't work, but it does.

I had one four years ago and still think about it :) Yummy

Must make a trip to London soon, just for a pie :lbf:

Why oh why can't someone open up a franchise in Manchester?

A few more tips if you don't mind:

- Walk along the Regents Canal from Camden to Limehouse basin. It's a long walk but well worth doing. The walkway is quite narrow in places and there a lots of cyclists on a good day but they are normally considerate so you won't go flying into the water. Some of the locks and houseboats along the way are quite interesting.

- The Bagel shops @ Brick Lane. They are open 24 hours every day of the year. Still very cheap. Apart from bagels their cakes are yummy and there is a lot to choose from!

- "Cheapo Cheapo Records" on Rupert Street, Soho. This is where a lot of the radio stations, record labels & press people dump their CDs. This basement shop has been going on for years & years. They are not too bothered about charging you the top price - they are more concerned about shifting the stock! So, everything is cheap. I got the latest Gossip Cd there for £3. I didn't really want it but got "conned" by the price...

Being the only white person in Bagel King on Walworth Road.

Picnics / drinking in the sun. Crystal Palace, Greenwich Park, Wandsworth Common, Blackheath.

Selhurst Park.

The Oval.

Lunch outside the Royal Exchange.

Walking over the bridges and along the Southbank.

Buying tunes in Soho.

Not losing in the Empire Casino in Leicester Square.

Raving at The End (RIP), Area, Ministry, Coronet.

Tottenham Court Road to Penge, why?

West Sydenham

All these tips are helpful and I'll be glad to be back next year to visit a few new places! We only had a short walk along Regent's Canal, but it's absolutely worth to take the long way - next time.
It would be kind if someone could tell me where I can still get some old fashioned Ben Shermans, Fred Perrys, Crombies and Mod stuff? Please..and don't say Merc. Only Charity shops?
Maybe I'm hopeless sentimental, but I still like to wear them.:)
