I believe this used to be linked to, has been transcribed and quoted here a few times in part.
That said, the links are long gone and having found it all on an old HD, thought some might appreciate seeing it.

Thank yous first:
Robert Mackie for compiling and sharing his booklet.
Stephane for acquiring a copy.
Aly / ThisCharmlessGirl for scanning Stephane's copy and hosting it on the much missed: Morrissey Scans site.

Her description back in 2011:
"The following letters were written by pre-Smiths Morrissey, circa 1980/81, to his Scottish pen pal, Robert Mackie.
After Morrissey’s ascent to fame, Mackie photocopied a selection of the received correspondence into a small booklet, made available to fans at the time for the cost of postage.
Eternal thanks goes out to Stephane of Passions Just Like Mine for sending me a hard copy of the booklet. :) "

(or scroll down in order if on a small screen).

There are plenty of other examples of his writing pre-Smiths, but this collection is pretty substantial.
Again, thank you to all who shared.
The last image looks like another passport-size photo, but would be awesome to see for real.
Anyway, enjoy.
Regards,
FWD.

Well, I bloody enjoyed all of that. So thanks for that. Still find it hard to believe that he never liked The Beatles. The White Album, especially. Also, his writing reminded me of Lennon's In His Own Write, and Spaniard in the Works.

Oh this is fascinating! So many pre-echoes of his later life.

"Why don't you speak proper, like what we do?" = a very early run-out for his Sadiq Khan comment of last year. (Which wasn't racist but which - perhaps more disturbingly - showed a view that those in power in the UK should speak "proper".)

I have a feeling that the witless take every word that Morrissey utters, seriously. There's a thin, scrawny member of this forum, that does exactly that.

I did like the irony of:
"The Polecats have just been on duh box destroying "John, I'm Only Miming."
Now if they REALLY had any imagination, they'd shoot themselves."

Little did he know... :)

Thank you for sharing! I really love reading Morrissey’s old letters.
He is so funny!!

Thanks for sharing these and it was good to read them again.

Some things have never changed with Morrissey. He has always made comments that can amuse and offend in equal measure. :)

Thank you, these letters show Morrissey is one of a kind. But I can't avoid feeling I'm violating other people's intimacy by reading private correspondence. I just read a couple of them and couldn't go on. I tried to remember the letters I wrote when I was young and how much the course of life and different experiences make people change.

"To me, all electronic music is a sad accident."

Thus endeth The Smiths :lbf:

"As for your medical jigsaw, I hope it turns out to be pornographic." :lbf: these letters are pure gold. I wish they'd continued, post-fame.
