Re: Morrissey Urges Al Gore to have Vegan Event

Dear Mr. Gore and Mr. Wall,

I am writing to ask you to do the one thing that will do the most good for the planet and the majority of its inhabitants: not serve meat or dairy products at Live Earth 2015. I don't mean offering a vegan option-I mean not serving animal products at all. Otherwise, the event will make no sense-it'll be "greenwashing." Serving meat and dairy products at an event to combat climate change is like selling pistols at a gun-control rally. Your responsibility is to alert people to a crisis, not sell out to the vendors responsible for it.

Not only is it possible for venues to provide a 100 percent meat-free menu-as is done now at every concert venue in which I perform, including Madison Square Garden, where I have a show at the end of June-it's also a moral duty.

We already know that raising animals for food is a leading cause of climate change and that moving toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat climate change's worst effects. Animal agriculture severely affects the world's freshwater supply and is a major contributor to global greenhouse-gas emissions, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and air and water pollution, among many other harmful effects.

Since you can't miss the fact that meat consumption is killing the planet-your own sponsor organization, the United Nations, states this-and since venues can and will cater vegan food for events, if you choose to serve animal flesh at Live Earth, you'll be making a mockery of the very concept of the event, in which case it should be renamed "Dead Earth: We Contributed!"

Don't be a denier of the causes of climate change. You know the facts. Make the right choice.

Sincerely, Morrissey

The point he makes is similar to the fact that Climate Change Conferences are held in places like Bali where the air conditioning runs non-stop.

Yeah, that'd be it. The whole animal rights thing has been a big ploy to sell tickets, all 30 odd years of it.
I don't doubt his sincerity one iota. History has shown us that these public statements coincide with an upcoming tour. I don't blame him, I'd probably do the same. It's just a little hackneyed.

I'm not ready to go vegan. Hope this isn't a deal breaker for Morrissey, that I'm "failing" him as a fan. :(

Because a person ate ice cream 10 years ago they can't be vegan now?

I'm sure he tried to get UK venues to be vegan and they probably told him vegetarian or nothing at all.

He does tend to tour at some point most of the year round though and usually you have to have something to flog in order to get an interview. If anything his stance goes against selling tickets, he seems to piss more people off with it than he converts.

Yes whilst eating his curds and whey Charles, oh but that was before your time wasn't it ? You didn't come around till after David T had all the shenanigans with his heavy handed cheesers !
Yes thirty odd years he's been bleating to us that meat is murder whilst eating the cheese, tut tut.
Cheese is Curder Charlie boy ! It's death for no reason and death for no reason is CHURDER ! And do you know how cheese is made ?

I agree completely!

1. Moz did the same while in the Smiths. Did Skinny complain then?
2. If Moz had made the comment at a time when he had no product to sell Skinny would have complained all the same.
3. In a letter before he was famous Moz offered disappointment that always the wrong people get assassinated and not "our dear Prime Minister". There was no audience. There was nothing to sell.

I agree with Morrissey, but this won't happen, obviously a huge part of festivals or "fairs" now is eating, which I will never understand, waiting in a huge line for a $7.00 hot dog or 10 stones official Carlesberg Etihad Emirates United steak pie is all about making money.

I don't understand something now, I thought Morrissey drank milk and ate cheese. I know for a FACT from a reliable stalker that he was seen putting Parmesan cheese on his beloved bowl of pasta. When did this change?

The same stalker that saw him in LA when he wasn't even in the U.S. yet?

Industrial and automotive fossil fuel burning is also a leading cause. Oh yeah, and he cares so much about the environment he now drives an electric car. Right...interesting how he shifted off the meat = murder to the meat = pollution angle to try and further the cause. Also interesting is how it seems to always be all or nothing with him. Maybe the event could lead to discussions as to how to greatly reduce the effects he speaks of rather than pushing his vegetarian agenda. Ultimatums are a useless tool when trying to build a consensus of non-like minded individuals. He has never gotten this fact.

I'm sorry but it's black or white, there is no in between, stop making excuses your as bad as those who hark that the Dubliner cheese in the Zagreb rider was for the lawnmower parts.

Why do they ALWAYS use adjectives like "scathing" when writing about Moz? I didn't find this letter scathing at all.

And yet many followed him and became vegetarian. And some of them even became vegan in the process even though Moz himself needed a bit longer.

Well what do you know! Morrissey isn't a perfect human being! He's trying to bring awareness to a cause and you people have to shit all over it. What do you propose he does? Find electric tour buses and gear trucks?
