I do wonder if Marr could choose to kick up a fuss about this song, when it's released? Or does it just do enough to blur the lines between plagiarism and homage?

The tone of the guitar and the rhythm is reminiscent of Cemetery Gates, but the chords and the melodies (singing and lead guitar line) are completely different.

Don't both Moz and Marr own the Smiths songs? Presumably, Moz can use the music and Marr could quote lyrics since they have joint ownership.

That's an interesting concept! I don't know, though.

Now I'm thinking I'd love to hear Morrissey completely re-record the first Smiths LP with his current band, and his current voice...

Oof, no thanks, that punk version of This Charming Man was a travesty.

A couple of bands I like have done this, Buzzcocks did one called A Different Compilation which was fab and the Bunnymen did one called The Stars, The Ocean’s and The Moon which was fab for some tracks but poor for others.

How long has this record been in the can for? Nearly 2 years? Hopefully it won't be long til it's out as I really liked the sound of I Am Veronica. Haven't checked out the others, but would prefer to hear the studio cuts first, though that may be a while!

On a first listen: it sounds lovely. Definitely the strongest so far of the Bonfire tracks for me. Even though his quality control has been on the wane, he's still capable of a great closing track.

Roughly, give or take a muffled lyric:

I turn to your mercy for you are a Saint in a stained glass window.
I turn for your mercy for you have a soul that can not be bought by money.

I've had such a hard? time, I've been waiting my turn since the wretched day I was born.
I've had such a marred? time, I should not exist.
You'll never find my trace on lover's lips.

I turn for your mercy, for you are a Saint in a stained glass window.

You weren't corrupted.
You tell the truth and you face being butchered?
I've had such a hard time, I should not exist.
I'll burn 'till the day I burn.

So, don't pick on me, I know nothing comes next.
I don't have any strength to protest.

So, Jesus let me die - don't torture me more.
I've pitched my sights no higher than this hardwood floor.

Oh, Jesus let me die - I can't do this anymore.
Give me rest - I'm too tired to protest.
Oh, give me rest,
Give me rest...
Give me rest...

Without a single shred of doubt, the strongest lyrics he’s put on paper for probably 16 years. This is astounding.

Saint is a strong effort, with a devastating motif described by the title and developed within the song. Melodically, it also excels, as with the best of Morrissey’s most recent work.

I’m somewhat reluctant to privilege its content high above everything else Morrissey’s pen has produced in the last decade or so, if only because I think the general diagnosis of his lyrical decline overlooks the fact that pockets of quality remain, and that the opposition between lyrics and melody can sometimes be unhelpful.

I’m glad the tradition of strong closing tracks continues. Is this superior to Hurling Days or Israel? If it is, then it may only have the slight advantage. It’s definitely the strongest track we’ve heard from Bonfire so far.

I’m hopelessly praying for that February release.

Does anyone else think the music for Saint… sounds a lot like Spiritualized?

Also, those lyrics are absolutely devastating. Applause all around for this track.
