I have had Saint on replay a lot. Amazing vocals and instruments, though I do feel that the lyrics leave a bit to be desired and hold it back from being a truly great song.

Saint in a Stained Glass Window - lyrics

Saint in a Stained Glass Window

You were made to be prayed too

you are a saint in a stained glass window

You uncorrupted

You tell the truth

and you faced being butchered

I’ve had such a hard time

I’ve been waiting my turn

Since the wretched day I was born

I’ve had such a hard time

I should not exist

You’ll never find my trace on lovers lips

You were made to be prayed too

For you are a saint in a stained glass window

I call on your mercy

For you have a soul that cannot be bought with money

I’ve had such a hard time

waiting my turn

I’ll be nobody till the day I burn

So don’t pick on me

I know nothing comes next

But now I’m too drained to protest

Oh, Jesus let me die

Don’t torture me more

I set my sights no higher than this hardwood floor

Oh, Jesus let me die

I can’t do this anymore

Let me rest

I’m too drained to protest

Oh, give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

give me rest

I like "Saint..." but I can't love it. It just feels too familiar - very much in the same vein as Quarry-era weepies like Friday Mourning, Never-Played Symphonies etc. A nice vocal melody but it just sounds like a ton of other Morrissey songs, repeating the same themes over and over. He's done this before and so much better with "Lost", "Pigsty", "Seasick, Yet Still Docked", "Maudlin Street", etc.

Those are all among his best ever songs. I don't mind at all that he treads over the same old ground as long as the songs are good.
