I bought a second copy of "Rank" recently just for the f*** of it. I was looking at the cover while I was playing it (it's my favorite cover sleeve of the Smiths' album) and something seemed off. Yeah, the new copies don't have that cool silver effect when you hold the cover at an angle under light. Hmmph. I guess the record label is being cheapo on the new copies.

But anyway, I love that cover, but I don't know a damn thing about Alexandra Bastedo. Why was she chosen? Is there a movie or TV show she starred in that Morrissey loved? Anyone who knows any more, please post!

Being bored as hell, what follows is what I've learned in a half hour on Google and consulting my Morrissey books.....

----

Here's what Morrissey has to say, as quoted in the book Peepholism by Joe Slee:

"The sleeve is quite spectacularly beautiful and lavishly packaged. As for the record inside, it's impossible for me to hear it without eating the pillow." - Morrissey, 1988.

Aw, come on, it's a pretty good live album. Most especially for the Elvis song that serves as the intro to "Rusholme Ruffians." I do wish they'd put together another official Smiths live album someday.

Morrissey wrote a note concerning the album title: "Call me morbid, call me pale, but I'm just not happy with the live LP title, and, trusting it causes little commotion, I newly nominate: 'RANK' as in J. Arthur."

Originally the album was to be called "The Smiths in Heat." Heh.

Here's a nicely done web page that shows the various formats of the album and other details: http://tmregistry.com/passion/smiths-d40rank.htm

That page includes the DAT format. Joe Slee says "Rank" was the only Rough trade LP ever released in that format, with only 100 copies made. Hmm, what's the going rate for one of those???

Now lets focus on Alexandra.....

As is sadly typical of the Web, here's the first site you get when you do an "Alexndra Bastedo" search: http://members.fortunecity.com/noops009/fcnoops_alexandra_bastedo.html

I bought this book blind, there was no blurb, thinking it might be a children's book or if not it could be part of my fledgling donkey story collection. I absolve amazon.com for failing to categorize it. Alexandra Bastedo is a British actress and life long animal lover. She and her husband, director Patrick Garland have a rural property overflowing with an assortment of animals many of whom were brought to them needing homes.

The book is an entertaining mix of James Herriot style animal stories, tales of theatrical productions and personalities, and introducing many British animal rescue groups.

Cherry Blossom the escape artist donkey, a vicious guinea fowl, Emma Thompson, Omar Sharif, tea with the Queen "Mum", Blue the trooping doberman - it's all here. Everyone probably has an auntie who would love this book.

Thanks for that. Very interesting.

> Thanks for that. Very interesting.

Now I checked her husband, director Patrick Garland, at www.imdb.com.

It says: "Patrick Garland and his wife, actress Alexandra Bastedo, are long-standing friends of England's Prince Charles."

Psh!

immortalized fans

Now I'm looking at the pic inside the album as the final track plays. Imagine what a boner you'd get if you went to the store, bought "You Are The Quarry," and found a pic of yourself inside! Lucky ducks. That might even make Julia Riley jealous.

Where are these fans now? Do they visit this site? Who won the tug-o-war?
Do they still have the pieces of the shirt? I hope the kid on the left, pulling for his dear life, got a big piece. Looks like he'd run crying to his mom if it got yanked from his clutches by the sharply dressed dude above him.

Did the young man on the right die of anorexia?

Will Oaf get a life?

Don't let that put you off. "Princ Charles" is a very popular name for pubs in Britain and also the name of a breed of dog.Or s that King Charles ?
It's much more likely to be one of those than it is Old Big Ears.

I was down in Peebles the other month which is in the Scottish Borders. We were in this pub and the sozzled old landlord told us that Princess Margaret used to drink in there on a regular basis.

It was well known that she liked her Gin and fags(that's cigarettes and not gay public schoolboys)

Anyway she hated all this Royal protocol so when the Royals were on official business in Edinburgh she used to get someone to drive her down to the Borders so she could get hammered.

It's a well know Scottish tradition that you ignore ALL famous people and pretend they are a milkman or taxi driver so when she went down there the locals just used to treat her like an ordinary sheep farmer.A mistake anyone could make.

From what I heard she always stood her round so it just shows that not ALL Royals are bad.Just 99.9% of them.

They'll probably be Bank Managers or Stockbrokers. There was a massive Tug Of War after the 1st RAH gig.

I was in the standing section and 15 minutes after the gig about half a dozen fans were still wrestling over Moz's shirt. It was mad.
The place had was virtually deserted but these people would just not let go.

Heh heh, you're not alone in your pondering, LoafingOaf. Mind you, maybe I need to get a life too. I often wonder if those successful in the tug of shirt war have still kept their patch of cotton from Morrissey's back.

Does anyone know any of the fans who queued for days to see him at the Wolverhapton Civic in 1988, the gig that was filmed for Hulmerist?
