Poll: What Song Would You Play...

You know the scenario...

You've got a friend or acquaintance who says: "Morrissey? You mean that depressing guy? Oh, I've never really listened to him. Doesn't he sing that 'Sun & the air' song? I never understood what was the big deal with him. I hate goth music anyway".

So you fumble through your Moz/Smiths collection (hurling Maladjusted out the window while doing so) in search of the perfect track to show this person the light...

Which song do you play & why?

I think one I would go for would be "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" In addition to great music, the lyrics are very moving... & don't support the "depressing guy" theory!

I'd have to go with "There is a Light that never goes out" because
it's such an incredibly beautiful song and isn't depressing in the
least..or i'd choose "now my heart is full" or some more humorous
song, like "girlfriend in a coma" or "vicar in a tutu" or "cemetry
gates". Maybe Paint a Vulgar picture or break up the family..
but i'd defintely go with There is a light..

funny, i actually think that track has sad undertones... someone fantasizing about dying in a car crash!

I would kill my friend.

A gift to Cili

Then I don't suppose you'd play 'Half a Person' then. Let's try 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before.' Lyrical wit, catchy hooks, that's why I love Morrissey so much.

i think" there is a light" is about finding someone you really want to be with forever after a life of feeling disassociated with those around you.

Take my advice and don't bother. Preaching to the unconverted is a waste of time. People who love The Smiths and Morrissey are on a particular wavelength. If your friend digs NSYNC, Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith then you have got you're work cut out for you.

Trying to get people to like the music you like is really a complete waste of time. Did it ever occur to you that maybe your friend is just a complete philistine! Only sensitive people can appreciate Morrissey and his music. It's certainly not for people with an IQ of 92 and under.

Last night I listened to the Smiths first album. Only a true Smiths fan can listen to that album and enjoy it, for other people it is and was a complete turn off. The Smiths were the least commercial of all rock bands, and their music is growing and growing in stature as I write this. That first album sorted out the wheat from the chaff in terms of fans. People with MOR taste hate anything that threatens the world they live in. When they read books its Danielle Steel and Jeffrey Archer and Clive Custler, when they listen to music it's Fleetwood Mac, Barbra Streisland and Bryan Adams. Let them have all this mediocre rubbish someone has to listen to it.

Forget converting your friend, just stay in, all on you ownio and enjoy the Smiths in complete solitude. In any case I don't think its's the music you would play as background when socialising with other people!

good grief! it's a RHETORICAL question, and besides...

um, this is supposed to be a fun poll. he's not actually asking for advice with a certain friend. get off your soapbox.

first of all, YOU were not born with an infinite love of the smiths and morrissey. YOU were INTRODUCED to the music. so why to you presume that other people should not be INTRODUCED to it, if not by radio of whatever COOL way you were, then by a friend. that's kind of what friends are for; that's the purpose of friends and friendship.

secondly, you sound like a total snob. perhaps you can't relate to the rhetorical question because you have no friends of your own? nobody worthy enough?

blecchhhh.

:)

that's my first choice, but there are others

'there is a light that never goes out' is my ultimate, favorite smith song and i think just about anyone can appreciate it. but there are other songs i've used to get people interested:

'well i wonder' is a great smiths introductory song.
'i dont owe you anything' works well.
'i know it's over' is long and morose, but it's one that people kind of like immediately.
'ask' is a fun one.

:)^o

Easy boys...

I don't think D.D. meant to come off as egotistical...

> first of all, YOU were not born with an infinite love of the

this is a good point. we were all non-listeners at some stage.

so why

this is also true, when you really care about something, you want to share it with those who don't know it. But D.D. was right too, some people will never like it no matter what. My girlfriend of eight months has probably heard close to the entire Moz/Smiths discography, but never once seemed genuinely interested or showed a desire to own one of the CDs herself.

it takes strength to be gentle & kind...

> Which song do you play & why?

Satan Rejected My Soul.

Its a good song that might keep someone listening enough
to realize that Morrissey has a sense of humour.

I Love You, Benny

Well, whenever I get this sort of question (or assumption), I usually don't have access to my discs, so I'll just say something like, "well, you know that song, 'Girlfriend in a Coma?' THAT'S the Smiths, and that song's quite upbeat!" Or I'll pick "We Hate it When..." if I think they'll remember it. Otherwise, I'd just glare at them and say, "yeah...he's that depressed guy who sings all those sad songs" and walk away in quiet disgust.

Oops...Forgot Something...

I've tried to convert people into being Smiths/Morrissey fans, but to no avail. I think it's because one gets so enthusiastic and deep when it comes to describing them, that it might put the person off. I don't know...maybe I need to figure out a different approach. Heh...maybe they just don't DESERVE to have Morrissey in their lives! :p

I would pick the "Lazy Sunbathers" because i dont give a @#!!!!!!

Re: there is a light...

My post was purposly over-simplified.

But the fact that you "called me" on it perfectly illustrates the genius of Morrissey. "There Is A Light..." isn't 100% romantic, pathetic, sad or beautiful... it's all of them at once! While 99% of modern pop writers can't even write intelligent verse describing one viewpoint, Morrissey manages to wonderfully weave often completely contradicting emotions in the same song!

Where is this brilliance in modern music? Answer: nowhere.*

I've done this a bunch of times

> Which song do you play & why?

It happens a lot, whenever I'm over some idiot friends' houses. I usually play "bigmouth strikes again" "girlfriend in a coma" "the queen is dead" "pregnant for the last time" or "you're the one for me fatty" I play those because they're some of his very unique + funny songs.

My friends laugh too + find his voice different but strangely nice. Nevertheless, they decide to stick with blink 184..136...155 (???) that's good enough.

Re: there is a light...

I find it curious that anyone would find there is a light depressing or pathetic. He isn't obesessing about death, but rather life (I want to see people and...life) and love. I think it is the perfectly romantic song. "One may love/marry/screw many people, but you only die once; and to have the pleasure of being with you well..."
Genius nonetheless.

BTW The Beautiful South have written some fine emotionally intelligent (and similarly off-beat) songs.

Re: Oops...Forgot Something...

Talking about converting people into morrissey/smiths fan, I¡¯ve actually been successful in getting some people to like the music. The most notable being my sister who at one time only listened to that Spanish music non-sense. Now, she won¡¯t even hear of it. I also converted another friend Elias, an avid new order fan who would not hear of Morrissey: ¡°he¡¯s for sissies.¡± A cousin, etc¡¦

The thing to do is to let them ease them into liking the music. They would hear it in my car and stuff. Sometimes, I would talk about clever little snippets from songs like ¡°then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn¡¯t ask" while the song is playing. At times, I would discuss entire song like "Lifeguard.." :) No really, for some reason I found myself talking about that song quite a bit---How it sounds realy-really good when you high :)

Once they go to a concert, there is no turning back...
