Gustavo Manzur has co-written quite a few songs (12), so, to continue the theme of an earlier thread (the co-writes of Jesse Tobias), I thought it might be a good exercise to also score each one Gustavo's co-writes out of 10. You know the drill by now, so let's go!

For clarity, scores should range should be between 1-10.

Here they are in alphabetical order:

  1. Bobby, Don't You Think They Know?
  2. Earth Is The Loneliest Planet
  3. In Your Lap
  4. Israel
  5. Love Is On Its Way Out
  6. Neal Cassady Drops Dead
  7. One Of Our Own
  8. Spent The Day In Bed
  9. Sure Enough The Telephone Rings (live performance only)
  10. The Girl From Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn't Kneel
  11. The Truth About Ruth
  12. Without Music The World Dies (live performance only)

NB:
If I give you a 'Like' (y)or 'Informative' ℹ️ this indicates I've captured your score.

I prefer Gustavo as a multi-instrumentalist than composer , but One of Our Own is a real gemm .

Easily the worst co-writer Moz has ever worked with. At times horrific. “One of our own” is a lucky shot, though, and a couple of others are decent, but all in all he is awful.

Good top-3, interesting that the new ones do so well.

Maybe @Juan Dulces also cares to join in

I'm here...and yes, I like you too ;)

I can't say enough good things about Gustavo. He brings so much talent and finesse into the band --- I hope he never leaves!

From highest to lowest - Tel Aviv, Spent, Bobby, Lap, Own, Neal, Way Out, Earth, Without, Ruth, Telephone Rings (only heard it live), Israel.

Thanks for putting this list up.
A useful reminder of how many excellent songs he's written and their impressive musical diversity.
The best thing about his compositions? They're completely free of the generic indie plod that plagued Morrissey's career from Southpaw to Refusal! Let's hope he stays on board.
  • Bobby, Don't You Think They Know? - 10, absolutely flipping brilliant
  • Earth Is The Loneliest Planet - 8, nice but a bit slight
  • In Your Lap - 6, prob a good composition but can't listen to it due to the awful lyrics
  • Israel - 6, as above
  • Love Is On Its Way Out - 9, flipping brilliant. Classic Morrissey.
  • Neal Cassady Drops Dead - 7.5, not bad
  • One Of Our Own - 8.5, yep, a good'un as I think we all agree.
  • Spent The Day In Bed - 9, the silly bus/boss/train/rain lyrics ruin the last part for me, but otherwise an excellent song. It may well have been his biggest airplay hit ever.
  • Sure Enough The Telephone Rings (live performance only) - not really listened to these live-only songs
  • The Girl From Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn't Kneel - 10, I really love this song. It's a gorgeous piece of music and despite the odd clunky lyric, the words are great, too.
  • The Truth About Ruth - 6, might be OK but the words make it hard work to listen to.
  • Without Music The World Dies (live performance only)

  • Bobby, Don't You Think They Know? 2/10
  • Earth Is The Loneliest Planet 1/10
  • In Your Lap 5/10
  • Israel 6/10
  • Love Is On Its Way Out 7/10
  • Neal Cassady Drops Dead 5/10
  • One Of Our Own 6/10
  • Spent The Day In Bed 7/10
  • Sure Enough The Telephone Rings (live performance only) 1/10
  • The Girl From Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn't Kneel -1 /10
  • The Truth About Ruth 5/10
  • Without Music The World Dies (live performance only) 5/10

Tel Aviv - 10

The Girl From Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn't Kneel - 10, I really love this song. It's a gorgeous piece of music and despite the odd clunky lyric, the words are great, too.

It's good to see a couple more 10 ratings for The Girl From Tel-Aviv. It was never going to make the top of the consensus, but hopefully it'll be saved from finishing in the basement. Most respondents are giving it middling-to-stinker numbers. Musically I think it's Manzur's finest contribution. A haunting, beautiful Jewish waltz—the best possible accompaniment to meandering but excellent lyrics that seem to be about the tragedy of Zionism. Les Tameside articulated the greatness of Israel by calling it "Nietzsche in a nutshell," and I think there's a lot of that in The Girl From Tel-Aviv too. "In fear of a God who hadn't saved them after all."
