Director of Flesh, Trash and other films, he also managed Nico and Velvet Underground at one point.

When film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum asked Morrissey in a 1975 interview why he portrayed drug addicts and street hustlers with such sympathy despite his conservatism, Morrissey responded: "A human being is a sympathetic entity. No matter how terrible a person might be, someone with an artist's point of view will try to render his individuality without condescension or contempt. That's the natural function of a dramatist. The movies I've made have no connection to my personal beliefs".

R.I.P. Paul Morrissey.

Never liked this clip where Paul
trashes Andy Warhol and the
Velvet "Underwear".
Paul seems kinda bitter, when he
had more opportunity than most
folks do.

He's really just 'bigging up' his own role as a movie director. Good luck to him. He's not saying anything that others haven't said about Andy, David Bowie included, and that Andy didn't say about himself. He said of himself frequently - There really isn't anything there. I want to disappear completely.
Of course, the flip side of what Morrissey is saying in the clip above, is how smart Andy was, that he got other 'clever' people to do everything for him, and stuck his name on it. Who was 'using' who?
I would imagine that being there with The Velvets was a bit of a 'shit show'. They were one of the first 'punk' bands in many ways. A mess of drugs and noise. I can't imagine there was much 'great' about them at the actual time of being there, when seen up close. And Morrissey saw them up close. 'Greatness' is a label that comes later with the critics. I don't think his bitchy nickname means anything more than that. It's kinda funny really. Those 3 VU albums will be listened to for as long as people listen to music. No amount of bitchiness and bathos on his part can take that away.

RIP Steven Morrissey's career.
He is really just a joke now and someone people do not want to be associated with and have to make disclaimers like they are seperating the art from the artist. I don't see how these obits enhance his career or are even interesting.

wouldn’t it be a nice change in his mindset if he were to ditch the obits? What if once a week he told us about some awesome old actor who still was alive? Maybe a bit of gratitude and appreciation for what does still exist on this pigsty of a planet would begin to manifest itself in his life and career…

stop being so negative, things will eventually look up for you.

If you don't 'get' why Morrissey likes to salute fellow artists who have passed, you don't 'get' Morrissey.

Of course I get why he does it. I don’t get why it’s the only thing he does. He’s been on a suuuuper negative trip for the past few years, and if you don’t believe that, you are sleeping. You do not want to believe.

Paul was right there on the inside, so
he knows stacks more about it than I
do. The comments just came off as
bitter, cause Paul benefitted from Andy's
success.
Iggy Pop used to tell a story, that he ran
into Andy durin' the recordin' of Fun House and Andy told him he should make
a song where he just reads from the newspaper. 50 years later, Iggy finally decided to give it a try.
