I was thinking about how good an opening song Jim Jim Falls is. Which got me wondering about the other opening songs of Morrissey's albums.

I think my order of preference would be:

1. Now My Heart Is Full (Vauxhall & I)
2. Maladjusted (Maladjusted)
3. Jim Jim Falls (I Am Not A Dog On A Chain)
4. I Will See You In Far Off Places (Ringleader Of The Tormentors)
5. Something Is Squeezing My Skull (Years Of Refusal)
6. You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side (Your Arsenal)
7. Alsatian Cousin (Viva Hate)
8. The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils (Southpaw Grammar)
9. Our Frank (Kill Uncle)
10. My Love I'd Do Anything For You (Low In High School)
11. World Peace Is None Of Your Business (World Peace Is None Of Your Business)
12. America Is Not The World (You Are The Quarry)

I chose The Teachers are Afraid of the Pupils, but Something is Squeezing my Skull came a close second.

I would love an officially-released mid-to-late 90s live version of The Teachers are Afraid of the Pupils, someday. I'm sure I've seen a couple on youtube from American shows (from '97?) and they were absolutely scorching.

I have a fondness for Teachers... as, having grown up surrounded by classical music, hearing Shostakovich in a Morrissey song coupled with the way it builds always stuck with me. Probably not the 'best' opener, but one I appreciate.

You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side

Grabs your attention immediately, and shows that Morrissey had finally settled in to his solo career with a new band, blowing away the cobwebs and malaise of the Kill Uncle era.

I'll have to go with "Now My Heart is Full" - but there are strong runners up for sure. "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" perfectly sets the tone for Your Arsenal. "Maladjusted" was a great opening track - too bad the rest of the album did not quite live up.

Good idea for a poll. Maybe a follow-up poll for closing songs?
