Morrissey Central "OPEN LETTER TO JOHNNY MARR." (January 25, 2022)

This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast. It is a polite and calmly measured request: Would you please stop mentioning my name in your interviews?

Would you please, instead, discuss your own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements and your own music?

If you can, would you please just leave me out of it?

The fact is: you don’t know me. You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings. Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts. We haven’t known each other for 35 years - which is many lifetimes ago. When we met you and I were not successful. We both helped each other become whatever it is we are today. Can you not just leave it at that? Must you persistently, year after year, decade after decade, blame me for everything … from the 2007 Solomon Islands tsunami to the dribble on your grandma’s chin ?

You found me inspirational enough to make music with me for 6 years. If I was, as you claim, such an eyesore monster, where exactly did this leave you? Kidnapped? Mute? Chained? Abducted by cross-eyed extraterrestrials? It was YOU who played guitar on ‘Golden Lights’ - not me.

Yes, we all know that the British press will print anything you say about me as long as it’s cruel and savage. But you’ve done all that. Move on. It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me. Our period together was many lifetimes ago, and a lot of blood has streamed under the bridge since then. There comes a time when you must take responsibility for your own actions and your own career, with which I wish you good health to enjoy. Just stop using my name as click-bait. I have not ever attacked your solo work or your solo life, and I have openly applauded your genius during the days of ‘Louder than bombs’ and ‘Strangeways, here we come’, yet you have positioned yourself ever-ready as rent-a-quote whenever the press require an ugly slant on something I half-said during the last glacial period as the Colorado River began to carve out the Grand Canyon. Please stop. It is 2022, not 1982.

Respectfully speaking, I think your comparison is not very accurate at all. As I posted previously, Johnny is turning into George Takei, the Star Trek character actor from the 1960's who never became a star and can only garner some fleeting media coverage in modern times by constantly nit-picking and attacking the legendary William Shatner, a man he only worked with in a limited capacity more than 50 years ago.

Uh, you mean George Takei the beloved icon who has over 3 million followers on Twitter?

Really this should have been a private letter that none of us knew about, not a open letter.

The thing is, if Johnny asked not to be asked about it, they would print articles about how he doesn't even want to mention Morrissey. Like the last one I read where they said that his agent had told them that they could ask him about The Smiths but not to dwell on it. The titles are clickbait, I agree, and there have been a few incidents where it was unnecessary, but mostly he just says "we are two very different people" "we see life differently" and then compliments him on what Morrissey did during The Smiths. Even saying that he still gets along with everyone he worked with except for Morrissey (and Mike Joyce obviously, not to mention how long it took for him and Andy to speak again) is just what happened and it read as he was just saying that he has all these lifelong collaborations and friendships and then had to add that it was not always the case. So I think this letter is completely justified but should be addressed to the press and not to Johnny specifically. I also cannot remember an instance in which Johnny spoke of Morrissey as if he was his psychotherapist, unless it's a very recent interview. Can someone enlighten me? (I mean that he usually doesn't dwell on what Morrissey thinks and just sticks to we are very different people).

Moz is the best singer in the world I love him and I support him it's okay that he has expressed his opinion, if he feels that JMarr uses him to promote himself. If this is true, it is a mediocre attitude, and it is appropriate to respond. An unstoppable soul like Moz must move forward with his career and exert an unstoppable massive action to make his album see the light in some way .!!!!! Moz VIVA MOZ CARAJO!!!

venus gets out of retrograde tomorrow. i've booked a prp facial.

I can even imagine Moz writing that letter with eyes full of tears, Moz is.a good guy doesn't deserve to always be attacked, he's a sensitive but with many strengths at once, that's my Moz

Also I don’t know much about Jesse, but his response and instigating shows he is not a kind person (to say it kindly).

My take on this is 'How come you've got a deal, and I haven't, you bastard?'

The consequences of one's own words and actions...

And did they not meet in a pub just a few years ago to talk about working together? Since then what has changed for Johnny is very little, and what has changed for Morrissey is everything, and he only has himself to blame.

He is a bitter, sorry old man, and his current adrift status is no one else's fault.

This missive, which could have been private but is not, is nothing more than an attempt to tell the world "I'm still here"

It's been decades & Marr feels the need to highlight that Morrissey is the only person he's ever worked with who he isn't friends with, isn't loyal to, is totally different from & was in the only band that turned to shit.

At a time when the music press has been demonising Morrissey & therefore it might be the popular thing to say.

It's not unreasonable to be wounded by that.
Well that a big yup! Mart should just say my time with the Smiths was awesome and leave it at that. It’s been enough years to talk about the smiths and Morrissey with fondness for what it was and what they accomplished. Anything less is just petty, unnecessary and unkind!

Ok don't abuse botox, you can have a bird mask, botulinum toxin is a toxin after all and future effects are unpredictable on the immune system, To my Moz he slapped me with his letter, I think it surprised many here, many were here with a botox face when reading Moz!!

Once again wrong, Moz is not jealous of Johnny his letter is much deeper than it seems, there is a mobilization, many feelings were mobilized, which was a relationship between them quite deep and certain boundaries that someone crossed, and something that resembles a disappointment that tears ..... something very sensitive more than people can imagine

Not only that, but Marr's signed to the label he got dropped from. He's probably concocted some kind of paranoid scenario where Johnny's engineered the whole deal with Moz the hapless victim of a vast conspiracy.

Right.
Morrissey just had a record breaking residency in Las Vegas and Johnny is opening for Blondie 😂
How can you have a record breaking residency when none of the shows were sold out? Blondie are great!

Wow. This must have been simmering for a while, but obviously the last straw for Morrissey was some of us on here discussing "The Draize Train" in the Smiths A-Z.

I don’t think Johnny has said anything in particular, I think he’s just been interviewed more often over the past 5 or so years due to an increase in activity in public eye and thus has been asked about Moz more.
He hasn’t said anything too detrimental to Morrissey in my eyes, always a sense of polite detachment from him, if with a slight snark.
Morrissey here is doing similar, perhaps feeling slighted that his name keeps appearing alongside Marrs in his interviews despite them not working with one another for a very, very long time.
How often is Marr by name mentioned in a Moz interview etc.

Anyway, it seems Smiths is dead. Quite sad to see really.

Having glossed over it more, it appears the “Golden Lights” and “unstoppable solo career” quotes I missed (somehow) and I know see Morrissey’s post is actually a lot more barbish than I initially thought.
I don’t mind in one sense, it’s his nature and always has been to have waspish snaps in his thoughts, plus they are quite funny.

But I am feeling quite sad looking at it now, because even thought Marr mentions often that he and Morrissey have nothing in common, aren’t friends, aren’t in contact, and that he’s interested in moving forward - I never truly believed him 100%.
I did often envision that there would be a surprise picture posted or something, of Moz and Marr sat, perhaps in the studio, both grinning smugly at the knowing behemoth of pandemonium bound to spark among balding 40 somethings that would unfold at the sight of their reconciliation.
Alas, this confirms it’s unlikelihood to be nigh on impossible, and that just aches a little.

Let me see if I remember correctly... it was "record breaking" because an employee of Caesar's commented on how much merch was sold. Is that even official?
