Obama sucks.

bored

not bitter but bored
So there is a new government rebate of up to $4500 dollars on a new car if you buy a new car that gets more than 10 MPG than the car you are trading in.

The problem is that your trade in must get 18 MPG or less.

My car gets around 27-28MPG.

I was all ready to buy a new car immediately but found I would have to pay full price.

I'm being penalized for making a wise purchase in the first place. How am I being penalized? That $4500 that other people are getting comes from my tax dollars.

While this program is in part to improve fuel mileage it also is a stimulus to get people to go spend money in an industry that is struggling.

It seems like everything Obama does never benefits me. I'm being penalized for having an education and a good paying job.

His health care bill is going to cost me money. Could be through an income tax on health benefits. Could be through higher premiums or co-pays as the government modifies the way insurance companies get paid. Could be both. Could be something else but there is no way that I am going to end up saving money because of universal health care.

I think I'm becoming a Libertarian.

I graduated college 2 years ago. My car is an ancient (1994) Ford Explorer that I inherited from my stepfather when he and my mom bought new Mazdas. It gets about 14 miles to the gallon on a good day.

I'm sure that I'm not the only young person in this situation. You're just out of high school or college, and you buy a clunker because that's all you can afford, or you inherit a rustbucket from friends or family.

I would dearly love to trade in the Explorer for something smaller and more fuel-efficient. Maybe I'll be able to now.

Also, I don't have health insurance. I would love to be able to be a part of a government health plan that I can afford.

Your taxes go to pay for things that, even though you might not directly use them (schools, public libraries, health care, etc.), they benefit the community at large.

The $8,000 home buyers tax credit is going to help make it possible for me to buy my first home.

I have no problem having my taxes go to things I use. We are now at a point where 51% of Americans (children included) do not pay any taxes. I'm already paying for health benefits out of my paycheck while my company pays a portion of it (which is part of what they used to entice me to come work for them).

It is not my responsibility to see to it that other people can buy new cars or get health care. You work hard and you bring those things into your life by yourself.

Now, if you are someone who is going to take advantage of things that are there, I don't blame you and I hold no animosity towards you. It is the programs and the mentality that puts them in place that frustrates me.

I am an independent and I'm only calling out Obama because he is the one signing off on these. Bush sucked too and destroyed a perfectly good budget which left Obama with a mountain of shit to deal with. The 700B bailout (Bush's doing) was a big deal but now we have another 787B (Obama's doing). Where is all this money going to come from? Sadly, there is only one place it can come from. Taxpayers.

Where is the government getting this $4500 to give to car buyers?

When they say how eloquent he is as a speaker, I agree he is much better orator than the previous President. However even he has joked of his reliance on teleprompters. When they say that President Bush exceeded his authority and expanded the role of the executive branch further than allowed in the Cosntitution, it is overlooked that the taxpayers currently own the failing auto industry.

Talk about health care? Before Obama I know in NY that ALL children under the age of 18 were already covered by the state. After 18 when one is of legal age to OMFG!! go get a job. When my friend needed insurance he took the referee test and worked on weekends and paid union dues to the referee union to gain benefits. I was lucky to get a job out of college but that was because I pounded the pavement and went on interview after interview until I found a job.

As far as finding work, I understand that certain people cannot find job opportunities but I have a hard time having any respect for those that are capable but sit on their asses and complain about what the government should be doing for them. No one should ever say that they are too good to work at McDonalds. I wasn't when I needed some extra book money in college and neither should anyone else who is looking for work.

So you're saying that health care in the US is good the way it is?

It is better than where they have "socialized" medicine. Otherwise "those" people wouldn't be coming here and spending their own money for a procedure they should be able to get at home.

I won't argue over health care, specially over the term "socialized medicine" which implies that somehow it has something to do with socialism.

I don't know who are "those people coming here for medical procedures" but there are dozens of 3rd world countries that have health care way more advanced than what we have here.

It is not as bad as the media makes it out to be.

For example when I was a kid (kindergarten to 2nd grade) they passed around figures and facts in the schools that one out of ten/twenty children were kidnapped around the United States in a noble effort to begin the fingerprinting of children to safeguard those children.

Years later I asked my Mom and my Aunt if before they started running fingerprints if one out of every twenty kids was actually kidnapped. I turned 34 the other day. I cannot remember anyone I have ever known in school or as a teacher ever kidnapped. It happens far less than the figures that were passed when I was a child.

How do you know?
I have lived in a few other countries and the US is so far my favorite. What's interesting though about the US is that the things that are better than what I was used to are much much better. On the other hand, the few things that are bad, we shockingly awful.

For me, health care is one of them.

My aim is not to argue either. I'd like to know which third world countries you mean. To hear it from the news, our health care is either the worst or the nearly the best.

The left says it stinks and the right says that the Canadians and British and French come here for their heart surgeries, etc, because in their home countries, sure they can get the procedure but the waiting list is so long they may be dead before their appointment comes up.

We always here the stories of the conjoined twins, etc from ---- coming to the USA for the operation. I don't recall any stories where the reverse happens.

Please explain how it was better elsewhere. I'd like to be better educated on this.

Well... I'm not an expert in the subject and never really needed much medical care.

My guess of when you talk about people coming here is because they are coming here seeking a specific, complicated procedure. But when it comes to regular things, I've heard horror stories.

I lived in Argentina also and I was always treated better there than here (when it comes to medicine, not everything else).

I have several Brazilian friends who pay health care in Brazil because they would rather be treated there. As an example, a few months ago a friend of mine in Boston needed a small surgery in his nipple to remove a cyst. This is obviously very simple and only requires local anesthesia. But his doctor wanted to give him general anesthesia, just so they get paid more by his health insurance. This almost generated a law suit.

I was shocked to learn that in the US, if you need to go to the emergency room with a broken arm, you get a bill of hundreds of dollars. Everywhere I've been, this stuff is free.

Some people I know prefer to take a vacation in Costa Rica for dental treatment, because they say it's cheaper and more advanced.

I have never ever heard of anybody going bankrupt because there was a sudden case of cancer in the family. People losing their homes to pay for treatment. And people being not being turned down by health care companies because of pre-existing conditions.

The few times I needed medical care in the Boston area, I had pathetic service. Isn't Boston supposed to have some of the best hospitals in the country?

Yes - I've never quite understood the US health system. Here (Australia) if you need treatment eg: broken arm then you don't have to pay anything. Hospital treatment is free, doctors visits are free but you can pay for private cover which means you can choose your own doctor, have a private room etc.

We have been getting 'stimulus payments' here of about $1,000 - which has been because the government wants us to spend, spend, spend!
