November spawned a monster - video

In Gavin Hopps book 'The pageant of his bleeding heart' it has the following very interesting passage on page 189:

‘There is an extraordinary moment in the video for November Spawned a Monster, which features Morrissey miming in a state of choreographed derangement in Death Valley, in the Nevada desert. In between the first and second verse (1:37-40 and 1:43-45) and again towards the end of the song, there is an interrupted tracking shot of the singer in the middle distance, as he slowly turns towards the camera, his face grotesquely disfigured by computer manipulation, and who appears as a result to have been transformed into a Francis Bacon portrait of himself. The shot only lasts for a few seconds and is easy to overlook. Yet it deserves to be as famous as – and is manifestly related to – the earlier ‘impaired’ appearance wearing a hearing aid and National Health glasses. In this brief moment………..the singer boldly identifies himself with and as the ‘monster’

Any comments please.

It's Gavin Hopps' opinion / interpretation.

I don't read anything too much.

i just watched it. seems like there is something there at one point. it doesn't look like anything done with a computer though. it looks more like he's holding something in his mouth. an apple maybe?

Regarding that book, mine has just been sent out. It had better be good - how long has it been mooted? I can't help thinking that the legal eagles have been crawling all over it. Gavin, if you're out there - fancy coming on here and telling the story of the book?

It looks like an apple to me too.

I'd love to see what a Bacon portrait of Morrissey would have turned out like.

~ ditto

and

~ ditto x100!

Mine is on it's way too. Why would there have been a legal issue with this book? My understanding was that it was an extended theoretical dissertation on the art of Morrissey, no biographical angle at all. Not even any pics, according to bysshe

I just re-watched the video on Youtube and fell in love with it yet again. I also really enjoyed the users comments. My favorite:

I've always loved this video, its so beautifully put together and Moz looks the part, very artistic. My only gripe is they should have had Mary Margaret O'Hara singing her part on top a hill on death valley dressed in some voodoo priestess outfit or something, it would have brought more drama to the clip, not to mention her part is so gripping, gut wrenching. It's painful to hear her but so loveable too, :guitar:

Oh my God. Hopps couldn't tell that was an apple in his mouth?

An apple would have taken away his excuse to mention Francis Bacon I suppose.

FWIW the book got a glowing review from Simon Reynolds.
