Northern Soul - favourites please

Thanks to the lovely Johan de Witt, I'm now the proud owner of a complete recording of Morrissey's wonderful 'My Top 10' recorded in 1984. Amongst other 45's Morrissey chose 'Paper boy' by the Marvelettes and 'Be young, be foolish, be happy' by the Tams. He talked about how he was very influenced at a very early age by the music his family, presumably his sister and cousins, liked.

The Wigan Casino was infamous apparently hugely popular venue for dances between 1972 and 1983 or so. Of course Wigan isn't that very far from Stretford.

Now if I were to go looking for the songs Morrissey chose I'd undoubtedly find them in the 'Northern Soul' section. I've got a couple of compilations of Northern Soul, one I think is on the oh-so un-trendy K-Tel label. My absolute favourite songs are 'Use your head' by Little Anthony and the Imperials and 'Do I love you?(Indeed I do)' by Frank Wilson.

Anyone out there also like Northern Soul? Any recommendations for tunes or clubs?

I'd recommend the boxed set 'The In Crowd - The Ultimate Mod Collection' - only one disc is what you would call standard 'white' mod (i.e. The Who, Small Faces etc) and the other discs are choc full of Northern Soul / Motown obscurities that the mod brigade used to 'get down' to all those years ago.

Many hidden treasures there...

Hotel/B&B by Old Trafford.

Theres some great Northern Soul nites in Manchester once a month by Old Trafford in a dodgy hotel on the main Rd by the ground.

I stayed there last year when Villa played MUFC and we had a crap nite in Manchester C-C and went back to the hotel early and had one of the best nites in the last 10 years.

I have an interview/radio show of Morrissey playing his favorite songs and that was on the list. Great song.

The main room plays everything from The Small Faces to The Strokes.
The upstairs room plays Northern Soul.
It's a top night.
Its on once a month at Sheffield, Leicester and Newcastle too.

Somewhat tardy, sorry.

"Fatboy Slim samples it. Ian Levine is making a film about it. More and more people old enough to know better are reliving their youth to it every weekend. A growing number of younger enthusiasts, at venues like Moving On Up in Leeds are rejecting contemporary club culture for it.

"It" is Northern Soul."

Don't let the reference to Fatboy Slim put you off for the compilation "This Is Northern Soul" Crimson Productions 1999 CRIMCD216 is excellent. Crammed full with 24 tracks, 74 minutes playing time of fine Northern Soul.

Although no "Paper Boy" by the Marvelettes or the Tams' "Be young, be foolish, be happy", there is enough music to brighten any damp winter's day and enough songs to hum while day dreaming at work. My favourites are the "Goodbye, Nothing to Say" by The Javells featuring Nasmo King. (Could have done with that song in 1997), Barbara Ancklin "Just Ain't No Love" and Evelyn Thomas "Weak Spot", but then it's like trying to compare emeralds to rubies. Hopefully you'll be able to find it in a cd shop in your part of town or in some of the bigger stores in the city. If needed I'm more than happy to do a copy for you.

I had or have somewhere an L.P. called 'Disco Demands' (crap title) but top N.Soul stuff, it includes 2 of the tracks mentioned by LoF, Goodbye Nothing to say & Under my thumb both top tunes. But the cover is ace it's a shot from Wigan Casino dance floor circa early '70's. I'll try & find it & do a scan.
How did we get onto discussing N.Soul in a Moz site anyway? Not complaining though.

It's 'cos I thought that a lot (well, some) of what Morrissey chose as his 'Top 10 Records' in 1984 could be cl;assified as 'Northern Soul' - 'Paper Boy' by the Marvelettes, 'Be Young, be Foolish, Be Happy' by the Tams. And Wigan ain't so far from where he was 'born and bred'.

Thanks LoF for your favourites - now I'll look out for them. understand what you say about rubies & emeralds - I'm looking for diamonds! There are so many compilations - most with Curtis Mayfield's (excellent 'Move On Up'on, that I was just wondering which one to get next. Thanks for sharing your choices.
