Re: Spare a thought for the 1958 lads

Yes, I agree. I'm not a Man Yoo fan myself, but this was first and foremost a personal, and then a football tragedy. Let's hope the upcoming silences at football grounds up and down the country will be given due respect.

Re: Spare a thought for the 1958 lads

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.United in respect.:)

Why?

Cause Morrissey sang about it?

what about that fire in a english football club

what about Heizel?

and I can go on about tragic affair in soccer history

do we pay repects on that days too?

even in my hometown Eindhoven in the 60/70's a hotelfire caused the lives
of players of a east German soccerclub, t silveren zeepaard across the
railwaystation

18 people died in south USA due a Tornado, do we pay respect for them?

so we can post every day a few of those tragedies, but we dont

salute the fallen ones in that airplane crashed close to Munich

The answer to 'why' is easy.
Yes it is in this forum as it is indeed Morrissey related. I'm sure there will be fans out there from far off places who do not realise what the song is about, so this thread may help them learn about it.

As for the other tragedies you mention, yes, they have been discussed before on this site but in 'off topic'. This thread would have been discussed there too, I'm sure, had it had no relevance to Morrissey / his songs.

I am a Man Utd fan and appreciate the club marking the annivesary with a service

at the ground. Manchester remembers it's tragedies along with it's triumphs.

Sorry, off-topic, but I'm amazed somebody remembers this. My mum's uncle was part of that team, I think he was their caretaker manager at the time (1970/71? Not sure, I'll have to ask him.)

Thanks for posting this thread, JJ :) It's very nice of you, especially since you're a Man City fan.

Morrissey didn't exactly sing about it. He sang about the grief felt by others about it. Being raised in an Irish/Manchester household, we had to listen to some pretty awful songs about the "Busby Babes". Believe me, you would cringe if you heard some of them! Morrisseys song is about the people who sang them songs. I don't say this in disrespect. But I have had to listen to some really bad songs on the subject!

I had the pleasure of meeting Alec Dawson, one of the new Busby Babes who helped rebuild United after the disaster. He read a reading at my father-in-laws funeral, 16 years ago, almost to the day. A very nice man.

Eindhoven brought banging drums and flutes that go on all f***in summer in Scotland. Can't they march all around Eindhoven all summer instead?
