MTV's Moz fan comes out of the closet

John Norris of MTV was discussing the best albums of all time with Christina Aguilera on New Years Eve. After Christina made her expectedly retarded choices, John Norris listed REM, Madonna, and then, yes, The Smiths, as his faves of the century. So I guess he really meant it when he kissed Moz's behind some years ago. Irrelevant, I know, but it's nice to know at least one of the jokers anouncing Backstreet Boys videos every day goes home and listens to real music on his own time. Carson, OTOH....

I'm back form vacation. Haven't been here since Thanksgiving! But, um...lets see...at the time some NME person was wanting to debate something...which I have on my hard disc somewhere. But it's probably too long ago to bother posting now. And there are a couple of you I owe email to from way back when. I didn't forget. I'll catch up soon. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

harharharharharharharharharhar,
this place starts to take it´s own form , well Loafing Loaf , you missed a lot of insulting debates, besides the very hated and now changed "new format" of the old format discussion board.

And about John Norris , Yeh ,I saw it,I saw it! ..certainly the guy jumped out from the closet hahahah..It was funny and surprising and nice to hear that someone "still"at mtv give them some credit, When my jaw almost fell was when this stupid of C.Aguilera, said; with her disgusting voice: the best album? .."oh well I guess any of Mariah Carey" DooooHHHH! -- what a hard choice you made jackass! ...
anyway ..
Also Happy New Year´s

y'know..."I'm a genie in a bottle, ya gotta rub me the right way..."

think talentless, tasteless, clichéd, pop-by-numbers, devoid of intelligence, style or wit, and you're pretty much there. britney spears kinda thing.

I happen to like both Ms. Aquilera and Ms. Spears. Decent pop music, "growth spurts," and, in the case of "Genie . . .", a really evocative metaphor.

Oh, I have heard of her.. yuck! I hate the way my nieces respond to those teenage hookers. They want to dress like them and sing those songs without any understanding of the consequences of acting subordinate to men. Genie in a bottle is a horrible metaphor to use I 'm hoping that's sarcasm I smell down there!

Some Cuban-American bimbo who thinks she's hot but, isn't........and has awful taste in music too!

Re: one question, who is Christina Aguilera? nt

And both are too sexy too. Thank you Colin for having the courage to say the things I wanted to say but I had no courage.

You've just touched on the exact reason I find the metaphor so unusally interesting for a Top-40 song. Genie in a Bottle - just who is in charge here? Where does the power reside? Look at the song itself. "If you wanna be with me/Baby, there's a price to pay", "You've gotta rub me the right way", etc. are not subordinate stances. The song is chock full of sexual politics.

The way she and Ms. Spears have toyed with the "jail bait" tabboo is pretty interesting, too. Plus, the songs are fun, and they represent the negation of the Carey/Dion/Houston diva formula. Maybe someone can help me with the exact quote - "all the icky, overblown sentiments and grande dame gestures of the past were replaced by girls with extreme youth anf fortitude."

Morrissey quote correction

> Maybe someone can help me with

"...cut an unusual figure and would herald a new abandoned casualness for female singers. The grande dame gestures of the late fifties had gone, the overblown and icky sentiment had gone. In its place came a brashness and fortitude. Girls with extreme youth and high spirits were to boldly claim their patch in a business which was obviously a male domain."

--Morrissey on Sandie Shaw, Sounds magazine (1984)

Your way was much more succinct Colin. :)

Thanks for the quote, Cili. See, there's nothing wrong with liking girl popstars!
