The best ever U.K music show,The Old Grey Whistle Test,is 30 years old this week.To celebrate they are featuring a week of special archive shows.Among those featured are rare performances from Patti Smith and The New York Dolls.2 shows that would have had the teenage Morrissey glued to his T.V.

The 5 man Smiths also gave their best ever T.V performance on this programme which included a stunning version of "Bigmouth".
Watch and learn folks this is where the seeds were planted for Morrissey and The Smiths.

I see they're releasing a 4 and a half hour DVD with 40 performances from The Whistle Test including The Dolls, Patti Smith, Bowie etc. I think they have one performance from each year, though sadly '85 and '86 are not represented, so no Smiths. However, you can see the Bigmouth performance on an episode of VH1 UK's Sounds of the 80's which is often repeated.

I went to Cardiff BBC studios to see the recording of Bigmouth.... almost. Andy Kershaw excitedly announcing the week previous that the band would be at the Cardiff studios to record the show..... only to get there and find Morrissey's Gran had died, and they had pre-recorded the segment!

Great!

Best Smiths TV performance, though, absolutely blinding.

I agree.. this was memorable.. and Morrissey looked so cool.. Andy Kershaw introduces, showing the Queen IS Dead album cover and mentions Salford Lads Club, from what I recall, and then they launch into such a powerful version of Bigmouth and (was it) Vicar in a Tutu..... Oh my God.. It's why I love the music to this day.. and they surely must show it as part of this OGWT 'season'..

They had Bowie doing '5 Years' last night as well.. That song is beautiful.. and can move me.. 'Thought I saw you in an ice cream parlour.. drinking milkshakes cool and long..' Like you say.. where Morrissey must have drawn inspiration..

100 Greatest Music Moments on TV

I'd imagine the Smiths clip will form part of this show - after all, the appearance in question was recently included in, was it, the Top 100 Greatest Music TV Moments....?

Andy Kershaw: "Last night I sat down and tried to make a list of the truly great British bands of the 1980's, bands whose recordings and influence would endure. After an hour there was only one name on it... The Smiths" Cue Bigmouth.

Is something how it goes

Morrissey's attire

Was Morrissey wearing blazer and tie and blue Levis? Almost makes wearing a tie acceptable.

Yes.. he was wearing that ensemble!! It was a template for my own dress sense for a season or two!! After I lost the Housemartin baggy jumper approach of course..
