SESTINA FOR A MAN

Who can really design how to just be a man?
Household appliances may part-resemble a science,
But igniting atoms to exist, move and have being
Is an oft imitated, yet quite un-mastered art.
Wobbly words, to begin, are set to voice,
That, warmed and tuned up, sweetly surge into life.

What makes it worthwhile trying to live this life?
Who do we need to know, to impress The Man,
The lionised maverick, arrogant judge of The Voice?
Is it better to pass and waive common sense and science
In favour of disciplined days to impact with art,
Waxing absorbent, omniscient witness to being?

Is it enough to be treated like a human-being,
No less and no more than the rest of sentient life?
Acts are transformed into living signs and works of art
In flesh finely-tailored as befitting the elect man
Whose scrutiny of crashing bores approaches a science,
Reverberating, lock-jaw free, in golden voice.

Soft-whispering or conducting crowds with one voice,
The pitch-perfect chief is ensconced with a surfeit of being,
Moved by instinct, irreplicable, contrary to science,
Performing from somewhere within, the abode of art.
In downtime, on midnight streets, a good-looking man
About town, endures heart-sore stings stitched into this life.

Oscar Wilde deeply believed in political art,
The power in the proper name and the pointing voice.
The masks, vanities, the emperor’s clothes on each man,
Are blown off by inspired breath that can bring into being
Or else obliterate landscapes, colliding with life,
And still the philosophers struggle with rules of this science.

Attenborough wades like a borrower through natural science,
Representing the real with the technical tools of art,
At safe remove from tooth and claw shot, from sweaty life,
From flailing body in view and from visceral voice.
Rare is the one who can blend the show and the being,
Who can civilly partner the gang as a savage man.

Art can be humble, like this sestina, to honour a man
Whose being is a blessing to many when they hear his voice
Sounding a science of the heart to get through this life.
