Morrissey-so much to answer for

It's interesting how the author disparages Morrissey's solo work as the voice of a tired, old narcissist and yet had earlier quoted the line 'loafing oafs in all night chemists' to illustrate a comparison to Greene. Morrissey was in his mid 30's when he wrote Vauxhall and I, so I'm assuming a 30+ year old narcissist is just as ugly as one at 40+. In my opinion Morrissey's solo music is not narcissism so much as observation; simply because that observation is subjective makes it no less valid or brilliant. After all, what artist doesn't write from a subjective point of view?
I recently introduced a friend to The Smiths and Morrissey after he'd heard, and loved, 'This Charming Man'. He then surprised me by saying that he preferred Morrissey's solo work. I always thought that fans loved both equally but, evidently, opinion is divided.
