As She & Him announce new ‘Classics’ covers album, Contact Music look at Zooey Deschanel's...

‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’

Arguably one of Deschanel’s standout roles was alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the cult 2009 romantic-comedy 500 Days of Summer. The actress contributed a number of songs to the film’s soundtrack, including her version of Nancy Sinatra’s 1967 single ‘Sugartown.’

However it was subtle grandeur of She & Him’s take on the classic Smiths’ track ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ that proved to be the highlight. Another lush piece of cinematic pop, the delicately plucked guitar compliments the singer’s yearning vocals in what is considered to be one of the better renditions of the often-covered track.

Morrissey and Joy Division more popular in Latin America than Manchester?

Manchester bands seem to be something of a Marmite option when it comes to popularity abroad - they either go down a storm or are left to their own devices. One example from the former category is Morrissey, who believe it or not is more popular in Santiago and Dublin than he is in Manchester according to Google Trends...

Below, in no particular order, we take a look back at some of fiction’s best mixtapes, and assemble their tracklists as best we can.

Mixtape: One Winter (Charlie’s Mixtape)
As part of a Secret Santa gift exchange, The Perks of Being a Wallflower’s Charlie meticulously curates a two-sided mixtape for his close friend, Patrick. It’s named for the second side, which Charlie describes as “winter kind of songs” that he hopes will make Patrick “feel like he belongs to something whenever he’s sad.”

A Rational Conversation: Do We Really Need A Rock Festival?
http://wuwm.com/post/rational-conversation-do-we-really-need-rock-festival
by Eric Ducker w/ Mikael Wood

It's weird, a Smiths reunion was always Goldenvoice's dream booking for Coachella, and now I don't even know if that would make sense for them. If that was ever going to happen (it's not going to happen), it would probably happen at FYF now.

I thought about the Smiths at Coachella this year. They would've been like the Stone Roses in 2013, where lot of young concertgoers were like, Who is this band?

The Smiths have so much tied to them, especially in Southern California, that I have to imagine there would still be some excitement about them from Coachella audiences. But then again I never would have thought four years ago that a Replacements reunion would draw a tiny crowd.

Coachella: where sure things go to die.

'Duet with Morrissey? No thanks, he can't sing', claims singer-songwriter Risa Hall
by Olivia Buckley, Mancunian Matters

Self-proclaimed 'adopted Mancunian' Risa admits not all of the city's musical exports quite live up to her standards, and would choose to collaborate with the 'unique' Oasis brothers over former-Smith's frontman Morrissey.

Originally from New York, Risa, who moved to the city in the same year The Smiths formed, admits to being less than impressed by the vocal talents of one of Manchester's most iconic, if not miserable, musicians.

Risa said: “If I could collaborate with any Manchester artist it would be the Gallaghers, it has to be the Gallaghers right? They have such unique voices and their songs are just such good songs, like they manage to get so much into just three minutes of a song it’s crazy.

“It definitely wouldn’t be Morrissey, I’m gonna get killed now [laughs] but yes seriously, his lyrics are really good but his voice isn’t up there and I’m all about the vocals.”

Luckily for her, Morrissey wasn't free for a collaboration...

If Kate Bush can make a comeback, then how about this lot? We can but dream...

The Smiths

Another reunion that the Prime Minister would love. His 2010 admission to being a Smiths fan prompted a hostile response from Morrissey, who insisted in March this year: “I don’t know a single person who wants a Smiths reunion.” Another slight obstacle is drummer Mike Joyce suing Morrissey and guitarist Jonny Marr for unpaid royalties in 1996 and winning about £1m in damages.

In his autobiography, Morrisey called his ex-bandmate “a flea in search of a dog”. Still, in January Joyce said he would never read Morrisey’s book, but would “of course” be up for a reunion. So provided Mr Joyce is still avoiding the autobiography section of bookshops, there is perhaps a chance of a get together. A very, very slim one.

doesnt kickstarter usually generate funds for recordings, not distribution promotion publicists hire stage crew etc. if that is the case then he already funded the recording himself anyway so it doesnt really make sense to me for him to do that. what would be the benefit?

Merchandise Talks 'After the End,' Punk Culture & Hating Morrissey Comparisons
by Chris Payne

“I f--king hate Morrissey. I think everyone’s stupid for idolizing him. Obviously I love the Smiths, but I feel like he stopped writing good lyrics once he started his solo music.”

But former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr? That’s a little better.

“I don’t know Johnny Marr personally, but I know he’s said some nice things about us in the NME, so I would say he’s much cooler.”
