Will Morrissey’s new album be any good?
There’s nothing more exhilarating than a great rock’n’roll comeback,
particularly when one of your all-time heroes is involved. But the
news of Morrissey’s long-awaited return is causing rather more
trepidation than anticipation round Great Debate Towers.
Of course, it’ll be great to have the big girl’s
blouse back, if only to show today’s so-called
pop stars precisely how interviews should be
conducted (with wit and verve, and as many
personal insults aimed at other pop stars as humanly possible), but
the most important thing will be the quality of his album. And, it has
to be said, the signs for You Are The Quarry, due out in April, don’t
look great.
For a start, he’s simply been away too long: seven long years since
his last album, Maladjusted, which was a load of old half-baked
scones anyway. Not quite in the My Bloody Valentine/Guns
N’Roses league, admittedly, but still longer than The Stone Roses
and Elastica, just two of recent history’s more cautionary tales on
the dangers of procrastination.
But more importantly, we need to know whether he’s resolved any
of the issues that made the latter part of his solo career so
frustrating: the bitterness of his self-imposed exile, his reluctance
to acknowledge that the world has changed and his downright
refusal to explain some of his more controversial actions (the
complete contradiction of his old approach, when the NME was
basically reduced to acting as his personal press spokesman),
If he’s put the past behind him, or at least learnt to live with it, then
You Are The Quarry could be the most exciting record release of
the year. If he hasn’t… well, it seems unlikely that it will provide
much more than a wry chuckle at the Moz-in-excelsis song titles
(My Life Is A Series Of People Saying Goodbye! Teenage Dad On
His Estate! I Have Forgiven Jesus! I Am Not Making These Up!).
Some will, of course, insist that a half-fit Morrissey is better than a
fully-firing member of The Cooper Temple Clause, and they may
well have a point. But those of us with memories to guard jealously
wonder whether he might be better off staying in LA and letting his
legend grow. And don’t even get me started on the Pixies reunion…
