FYI- the interview is from the current issue of American Songwriter magazine, the “Legends” issue!

refreshing interview.

Open questions and answers that breathe thankfulness and therefore feel positively responding. Probably not a coincidence that it takes place on non-European soil.

Dear me. Photoshop Strikes Again. Do we really think Morrissey is demanding that his photos be Frankensteined, or do we think this is Sam attempting to showcase his 'skills' to please uncle?

I also see a terrible use of the infamous photoshop, but certainly not a "Frankenstein plastic surgery", but someone was playing with the gamma and the contrast as to make the photo itself look a bit more attractive and make it look a bit like a Rembrandt... but they have not altered the face itself with weird things such as removing wrinkles and making him look as if he was 30 years old.

I liked the interview! I like his very unusual approach to music, which reminds me a lot of a few other singers who are not musicians; Genesis P-Orridge comes to my mind. For some weird reason their absolute lack of interest in learning music in a conventional way ended up giving them an unusual freedom (though, of course, the counterpart is that they both have to rely on "traditional musicians" when it comes to making the music itself).

Is the director of that fan video for "Who Will Protect Us From the Police?" trying to say at the end that Venezuela is beautiful because their models show a lot of cleavage?

'In fact, you must say things that people want to say themselves! That's when the song strikes!
In a 2017 where freedom of speech has been completely eroded, my name is often mentioned with a quiver of paranoia. But, so what. Songs are what we leave behind, and ... '

RIGHT ON MOZZY ! RIGHT ON !

finally an interviewer actually asked him a recording artist about his recent recording! amazing.

Venezuela is a shit hole country along with all the other failed planned economy countries turning gold and oil into shit.

Failure comes with the colour brown.

well, this interviewer had no problem of not asking, even if some of the songs are political.

We don't know what Morrissey wants to talk about. I'm sure he has no problem in talking about the political subjects of his songs. Though it's nice to read about different aspects of the songs & studio work that went into one of the best albums of 2017 ... Low In High School.

<>.
Or, he can simply refuse to comment on Kevin Spacey/Weinstein. Does he really care? I don't.

No doubt, socialism has turned Venezuela into a shithole, not sure it's even up for debate (although I suspect it will be.)

All The Young People Must Fall In Love was recorded in two hours...well, well, what a surprise...NOT.
Morrissey's late career - since YOR certainly - has been characterised by songs which (according to him) have simply emerged spontaneously in the studio, with little to no lyrical or melodic efforts worked out beforehand. And one can certainly hear it. Would the assiduous Morrissey of thirty or twenty years ago have let such shoddily half-arsed work out of the door?

No he wouldn’t have, he’s become lazy in his old age. He would have canned songs and never released them if they weren’t up to par to his standards back then and you can see he has none now, its pretty much release whatever comes out. Songs like oh phoney, lifeguard on duty, striptease with a difference, born to hang, please help the cause against loneliness, all great songs but they were canned they couldn’t cut the mustard. Where now he will release whatever, none of it is quality anymore, he use to be his own critic but I guess he became a yes man to his own work just like everyone else.

I disagree about the Photoshop, Oh My, you only need to look at the hair. He hasn't had hair like that for about 15 years. Sam even admitted to Photoshopping the shot that he took prior to the album release because there was such an outcry over whether Moz had had plastic surgery.
But I like your other point about his lack of musicianship giving him freedom to think differently - interesting insight.

I can't look at a photo like that and assume there's no photoshop there, because it's obvious for me (and I know about photography). Then again, it's not a "cosmetic photoshop" as to eliminate wrinkles or make Morrissey look younger. They simply increased some 2 points in the gamma... as to make the photo itself look somehow more pictoric (it reminds me of a painting by Rembrandt!). I am sure that the photo before the photoshop was close to this image:

a_close.jpg

(same photo, but with -2 gamma points... same thing, except that less "pictoric"... but I do not see "photoshop make-up" either... just an attempt to make the photo more look a bit more like a chiaroscuro).

Other than that, he is a true poet... Besides from having that fantastic voice, he is actually incredibly skilled when it comes to playing with homophonies, double meanings, and all the figures of speech available all the time. I adore his Wolverhampton version of Sister I'm a Poet... and something I specially like about it is how a random plastic bag that ended up in his hands became part of the song... and "All alone waiting at the lights" suddenly became "a plastic bag stranded at the lights". So he certainly has that spontaneous poetic intelligence.
That's why I thought of Genesis P-Orridge of Psychic TV... s/he doesn't like rehearsing either (s/he stated many times that s/he does not rehearse at all)... and his approach to singing is often purely based on improvisation. S/he also has a decades and decades as a singer and s/he's unable to tune a guitar (but works with musicians too, just like Morrissey does).

I.e, it is obvious that Psychic TV was simply going to play "As Tears go By", which they have recorded using the lyrics of the Rolling Stones... but the live version in Tokyo suddenly became a "new song", and it is safe to assume that Genesis had absolutely no idea of the lyrics he was going to sing... the band simply played "As tears go by"... and Genesis began to sing his "new song" improvising... and the band had no idea of what the hell he was going to sing:

The big difference is that one of them has chosen an absolutely experimental genre (Genesis), whilst the other has chosen a more conventional genre (Morrissey), but the two of them are somehow proud of being outsiders. I mean, it takes some 2 or 3 years to learn the basics of guitar playing (of course, you won't play like a Jimmy Hendrix in 3 years, but if you have devoted your whole life to music, it is a bit weird to have consciously or unconsciously decided that you can't read a partiture of play the guitar, at least very basic songs)... but I really like their "outsider" approach to music, singing, songwriting... and I do not think that Tony Visconti was exactly wrong when he said: "He has a knack of pushing people away from him. It’s the way he lives his life". I know that Genesis always did exactly the same thing (I was NOT surprised when the comeback of his seminal band Throbbing Gristle ended up with the formation of X-TG, which was TG minus Genesis, because the other members didn't want him in the band).

I guess it is probably complicated for a more conventional musician to work with an "outsider" who has his own self-created rules... even if the results are jaw dropping.

Other than that, there are not many artists like that. The usual complainers deserve something like Oasis... catchy, predictable and boring.

So many words and so full of shit. You only have to look at some recent pictures to see there has been cosmetic photoshop - around the eyes for a start. Including this one
I don't think photo shop is a bad thing. Lots and lots use it. Morrissey has had it used since smith's days, like ever other act., as has been mentioned before.
The difference is sam isn't good with photoshop - look at the last two shockingly bad.
He isn't a good photographer and tries to make up for it with photoshop, trouble is he is as bad with that.
As for your snobbish Oasis comment. As bad as Oasis were at times every lp they had was better than the last four by morrissey.
As it goes Liam is, at base level, quite close to morrissey in spirit - both are IrishEnglish, both can't be told what to do, both do their own thing, both are gob Shites, both are funny, both are untrained singers (if you can call being in the industry for so long and having a few lessons untrained) both have a English working class sense of 'real' and 'fake'.
People just think genies is edgy because she's a tranny. Morrissey and Liam would never use Charles Manson imagery to try and be 'dangerous' like that c*** does.
Throbbing Gristle had some good songs but he's no morrissey, just as Trent and M Manson aren't (though have been compared).
The sad thing is Liam out classed morrissey on a huge scale last year. Moz needs to get in the game, most know he needs to spend more time in the uk. It's America that has had a bad effect, it's made him too lazy. Too relient on an audience that doesn't understand him. As for the 'outsider' comment, can you really be an outsider when you are a wealthy man that has a day named after him in LA?
The trouble is, in real terms morrissey stoped being the outsider after Kill Uncle and slowly became what we have now, just an entertainer. He was always an entertainer but he was also an outsider, a poet, a symbol. I expect he could get that back. The talent is there.

Talking of photo shop and surgery look at these pics of robbie a from a photo shopped (neck face) Marco polo ad and the real robbie botox and all.

Shit, pictures didnt come through.
But ompare his Marco Polo shoot, which have been heavily doctored, face neck change and more (though he still looks like Freddie Star) and compare them with his none doctored pictures from the Marco Polo press conference and some live shots the difference is immense.
He's also had surgery. He's only 45 or 46

When you see robbie you think thank God for morrissey

Didn’t he promise not to do anymore print interviews? ...a month or 2 ago? More dribble from Israel’s favourite shit-talking, washed-up, cut-rate, off-strip Vegas karaoke and half-assed vegan food-truck crooner.

He said, on November 25th, at the Chicago Riviera Theater: ‘I did an interview a couple of weeks ago for a German newspaper and, of course, let me just say this: That was the last print interview I will ever do.’

In that case, this interview must have been conducted before that comment; the only other possibility is that Morrissey is a hypocrite when it suits him, which surely cannot be the case.

They believe he is an american songwriter!

LOL

Them thick americans like go to Seattle and shoot up shit like on a rainy day under a bridge.

Yes, that would flag him up as an asbsolute hypocrite. Well done, moderator, for not being a sycophant and pointing this out. More power to you!

This one is a keeper.
Music "journalists" take note -- this is the kind of interview that pleases fans, and also gets non-fans interested.
