Morrissey Influences Clothes Designer

"IT'S difficult to image Morrissey, the famously morose former lead singer of The Smiths, attending the frocks and frivolity circus that is Australian Fashion Week, but Kate Sylvester gave it her best shot yesterday with her range This Charming Man named after one of the band's greatest hits.
Loosely based on Morrissey and other charming fops and poets, Sylvester presented a collection heavy on embroidered white shirts, chunky cardigans and librarian-length pencil skirts, which were teamed with men’s loafers.

The New Zealand designer wisely recruited her country’s star fashion stylist Karen Inderbitzen-Waller to amp up the manish vibe of more feminine tiered dresses in sorbet colours, which she did with fob chains and floppy cravat-style bows tied at the neck..." :drama: :flowers:

How bizarre! I didn't even know it was Fashion Week here, but then again, unstylish people like myself wouldn't. ;)

I wonder what Moz would have thought of that? I can't decide whether he'd likely to be flattered, or annoyed that he'd inspired something as frivolous as a fashion show...

Haha random, will have to pop into her shop here in Wellington see what's there :p.

she is not the only one influenced by moz

Louis Vuitton Haute Couture Homme 2003 during the fashion week in Paris, Marc Jacobs (Vuitton's designer) said he was inspired by The Smiths and mods for this collection. The models did walk the catwalk while smiths songs were played
someone responsible for vuitton wrote a comment on the main page
quote:
I'm a member of the vuitton team for menswear, and I just want to say that the Smiths were a big inspiration for the collection
not their own style but the feeling of the music
(60's london movies) and the record sleeves
the music was :
barbarism begins at home
well I wonder
what difference does it make

also
moz has been mentioned a few times in interviews as favourite music by stuart vevers (former head designer of mulberry)

also once more concerning the ute ploier shirt
there is a 2008 thread where some people saw the shirt on flickr which supposely was tagged with GAP (unsure if it really is THAT Gap store or "the gap"-a fashion mag) and wondered how to get it as there was no link to the designer
-i wrote some keywords to the thread down back then cause i was interesting in finding out who designed it, then thats how i found the thread again:http://forums.morrissey-solo.com/showthread.php?t=78739&highlight=spring+summer+2008

I love this bit from the show notes:

"I was walking down the road one day when I came across Morrissey in a billowy shirt.

'How charming,' I said and we continued along together.

We came upon Scott Schuman photographing Alessandra Colombo. 'What a pretty boy you are,' I said to her, so she came too.

Keats was busking on the corner. 'Oh how swooney,' I said and gathered him up.

Loulou de la Falaise was walking the dog. 'What a well cut suit,' I exclaimed and along the came.

Proust was taking time to smell the roses. Writers block,' he groaned. 'Party,' I smiled and he joined us trailing rose petals.

Prince Vinnie had his iPod cord tangled up in his camisole straps. 'Never mind,' I said, 'We need some music.'

And then I saw God. 'Please join my party God!' I exclaimed. 'OK' said Chanel and my collection was complete."

Here's the collection on her website:

I think that her previous collection "Diamond Dogs" is even more Morrisseyesque! More beads and tweeds. (Except for the one piece with the hopefully fake fur)

^I would so buy this coat if it wasn't NZ$695.00

EDIT: Only $494.645 USD, but still too much. *pouts*

I also love that she gives away a free Penguin classic if you subscribe to her website. Cool lady!

Now that's the sort of designer t-shirt I'd actually buy! You know, if I had the money.

What, they weren't inspired by Morrissey's Evans Outsize blouses and plastic beads? How insulting! :p

Fashion is far from my area of expertise, but I do like these a lot. :thumb:

Thanks for pulling up the pictures, Je Suis Julie, and for all the extra information about other designers under the Smiths' influence, sistasheila. Morrissey, like his hero Oscar Wilde, has frequently made statements with his wardrobe, part of the living sign.

an addition to the ute polier shirt:i contacted the office of ute polier (not for me -i couldnt afford it- as im extremly short of money .but lots of you are surely better off)and they say they dont have the collection of 2008 in stock any more
if you are lucky you get in a second hand store or ebay
also:there are outlets/second hand shops for designerstuff only
