Morrissey and politics

I was at the RNC protests in Philly this summer, and I was wearing a Moz shirt when some Communist walks by and asks me, "Morrissey? I like his music and all, but didn't he turn out to be some kind of reactionary?" Now, Communists do have the tendency to call anyone they don't like "reactionaries" and "counter-revolutionaries," so what exactly are Morrissey's political views (I know about the PETA thing) and what does he do about them? - ryan

I think Morrisseys' politics were quite open and clear throughout his career. The title "Margaret on the Guillotine" says it all really. The 80's were a terrible time in the U.K for those affected by Thatcherism(basically all working class people) Thatcher was,of course, great friends with that other well known right wing bully Reagan. The Smiths also played at "Rock against Racism"(yes, really)in London and Glastonbury(where all proceeds go to Greenpeace" .
Like many others from Labour heartlands Moz is a bit disillusioned with Tony Blair but he is better than what we had before.

Morrissey was also widely quoted at the time of the Brighton bomb bemoaning the fact that the IRA did not wipe out the Tory cabinet of the time.

Of course, it saddens everyone that Moz has chosen to life in a country that used to typify all the greed and hate he used to so often speak out against
"there are some bad people on the right"

MORRISSEY COME HOME!!!

Well Maybe we are "greedy", but we do keep our bricks to ourselves.
He has said it himself, he IS home.

> Well Maybe we are "greedy", but we do keep our bricks

Is it a coincidence since Moz dedcided to"retire" to the sun his creative output has been zero for the last 3 years?.
I doubt if the inspiration for another "Late night Maudlin Street" will come from sitting beside a swimming pool surrounded by "yes" people.

If the new album is indeed titled as he said it is, it'll be an excellent occasion to hear him on the situation in Ireland and N-Ireland.
Or is the title by itself, again, the statement?

If the new album is titled what I think it's going to be titled (and what you're saying) I'll disown him. He's simply inciting racism with it. And don't dispute me, didn't you read the Guardian yesterday?

you mean Straw's attempt at reasoning?
you'll have to spell out why Moz would be inspiring racism with sth like "Irish blood, English heart".

ha, I think I got your point now, LMC ...

I don't see how a CD title could be the blame for what is ugly in the world...This hate has been around since humans walked the earth....I think the album title is lovely...because it is what He is....Irish Blood, English Heart.

I know nothing about his political views, but I'm sure he is more reactionary now, unfortunatelly. You don't even need to ask... Just see the things he has been done.

i think Moz has been singled out for his ill-advised flirtation with far-right imagery in the past, coupled with the decidely ambiguous lyrics of songs like "The Nation Front Disco" and "Bengali In Platforms". Apart from that, he has made high profile comments on vegatarianism and animal rights in the past.

One thing I find interesting, is the fact that (now correct me if this information has changed) last I heard Morrissey wore leather. Now how you can be a supporter of PETA and be a vegetarian and wear LEATHER is beyond me. I love the Mozzer, but that's hypocritical to say the least. For some reason I'm thinking the info about him wearing leather is from a spin interview, probably in 93 or so.

Johnny, you seem to really know your Morrissey stuff. As far as America being the "land of greed and hate" I'd dare say that's not been my experience here, but as I've not lived in any other country I don't really have anything to compare it to. I certainly find it difficult to think of Moz in Cali though... that's for sure It's a lovely place though, so why not?
