Listening to YOR it occurs to me that he is one of the few artists working today that is able to flirt with pastiche while being recognisably himself and no one else.
Pastiche is all the rage these days, but the trend seems to be to go the whole hog and be pastiche and nothing but. I'm thinking in terms of Duffy, Richard Hawley, Amy Winehouse, The Last Shadow Pupplets. They ape styles but don't really bring anything new to them.
Personally I prefer Morrissey's way of doing it, but would he get a lot more critical approval if he went the whole hog and just pretended to be Sinatra for a whole album?
