Make sure you vote on 4 June 09 and stop the BNP!

Virgil Tracy

Good Evening West 'am!
It's vital that as many people as possible vote on Thursday as the BNP only need 8.5% of the vote to win a seat in the European Parliament. As a country we can pride ourselves on our tolerance and patience and a belief in free-speech.

As our Fathers and Grandfathers fought fascism in the Second World War lets not take a huge step forward by allowing fascists to represent us in Europe!

If you want to do something more than just vote, check out www.hopenothate.org.uk/ :thumb:

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

You would hope that Britain contains enough sensible people that the BNP wont get 8.5%

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

The Green Party will be getting my vote.

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

I thought about voting for Arthur Scargill..Just sentimental..

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

I'll be voting for the independant even though I've no idea who he/she is and what they stand for. Nobody takes my fancy really and I don't like not voting. Besides, how many people actually know what they are voting for here? All the duckhouses and what-not have clouded this election, hardly any press coverage at all

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

I shall be voting Labour as per usual.
Hate all you want, I DON'T CARE

I can't find any information on my local candiates, the only paraphanalia I have received is a flyer from Labour. Anyone know if there's a website with details of who is standing in my area?

Just vote Labour. :D

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

I got BNP fliers through my door!

I put them in the cat tray to be shat on. :)

Correct! I and a few other members of this forum are members of the aforementioned party :)

For the European Election a run down can be found here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8060102.stm - if you have local elections I'm not sure, but if you have only had a leaflet from the Labour Party, that might tell you all you need to know.

Visit your local council website; that should have a list of all the candidates for your region (mine's North West).

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

If you don't vote Lib Dem around here it's a wasted vote.So I'll waste mine and vote Labour. Can't go against a lifetime of ingrained beliefs.

It's funny though. The Lib Dems are more left than Labour now. The Labour has introduced quite a lot of policies over the last 10 years that Maggie would be proud of...well, actually, she said she approved of Tony Blair. So yeah.

Though I can't deny that some of the polices introduced since May 1997 would be seen as centre right, it is wrong to claim that the Lib Dems are to the left of the Labour Party. At times they have floated policy that would be to the left of the Labour Government (it's important to disguise between the two) but have since flip flopped, especially since Clegg become leader. Politics for a long time in this country has been over means and not ends as parties have fought over the centre ground. The Lib Dems have no core ideology running through them - therefore it is easy for them to shift opinion.

Anyway - that debate is for another day - let's just unite and defeat the unrivalled evil that is the BNP!

The name suggests the ideology. They are Liberals with a sub-section of social democrats.

Either way, I'll vote for them as I have done since 2003 because they are the closest fit to my own ideas.

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

I really don't know much about British politics.

Can someone give me a quick breakdown of the parties, what they stand for and what % of votes they are expected to get?

I don't need a thesis. Just something you can put together in 5 minutes.

Socialists- Anti EU, left, claim to represent the working class

Greens- pro-environment, pro non-violence, left.

Labour- once represented the common man. Not any more though. Left of centre.

Lib Dems- in the middle, splash around alot but no-one really takes much notice of them

UKIP- Want complete independence from Europe. To stop unlimited immigration. Slightly right of centre.

Conservative (Tories)- Upper class tw*ts who want to get on the side of the common man and who I hope to god will fail at this. Right of centre.

BNP- Racist, sexist, homophobic. Nuff said.

Re: Make sure you vote on Thursday and stop the BNP!

Ok,

Labour: Current governing party. Generally of the centre-left, more accurately a third-way party in much the same vein as the Clintonian Democrats. Winner of each general election since 1997. Will lose heavily in this current election. ICM had them at 24% last time I checked.

Conservatives: Main opposition. Centre-right party, split between traditionalism and economic liberal wings. The equivalent of the US Republican party with considerably less emphasis on religious lunacy. Will win the most seats, polling had them around 30%.

Liberal Democrats: Third party. A merger from the more centrist Labour party members and the old Liberal Party. Socially Liberal and generally seen as a party of the centre-left. Probably around 15%, maybe a little higher.

Others:

UKIP: One issue party made up of a number of Tories who were upset about the Conservatives becoming less anti-European. 7-8%

Greens: As the name suggests, a predominantly environmental party, further to the left of either main party. 6-8%.

SNP: Scottish Nationalist party, who are broadly centre-left. Only contest seats in Scotland, where they are currently the governing party. 5%

BNP: Far-right "nationalist" (read neo-fascist party) anti-immigration blah de blah. 2%.

Remember this is not an election that will decide the leaders of the country but only representatives that will sit in the EU parliament and is decided on a proportional representation basis, which gives the smaller parties a greater chance of doing well.

In short
Labour: used to be good but is now a bit of a joke (but we still like them because what else is there?)
Tories: the evil spawns of Satan, their leader is a potato-headed professional idiot. (not my words but I'm sure Charlie Brooker won't mind me borrowing this definition of David Cameron)
Lib-dem: wishy washy fence-sitters so not to be taken too seriously
BNP: scum of the earth racist bastards with no real political backbone.
