Hello all,
I am a self-proclaimed "lyrics snob." While I can enjoy many songs that don't have "deep" lyrics,-and I do- I really have a soft spot for those lush, well written songs. I've been a fan of Morrissey and the Smiths for a long while, and it goes without saying how much I love the vast majority of Morrissey's lyrics. Anyway, I'd be curious to hear lines and lyrics from other artists, old and new, that you all think are Morrissey-esque. or Morrissey-inspired. (A very similar thread was started in 2010, but is archived (read-only), and as a newcomer to this forum wasn't sure if there was a way to revive it, or if I should just start a new thread. I couldn't find an active thread on this topic, but if I should have posted this somewhere else, my apologies, and please feel free to move it or ignore it! )
One of my favorite artists is Rufus Wainwright. He has mentioned Morrissey as a huge influence on his songwriting, and while there are definitely lots of differences between them, I personally can see the Morrissey influence in terms of his lyrics and their wordplay.
My Morrissey-esque lyrics are:
"Do I Disappoint You?" from the album Release the Stars by Rufus Wainwright (2007)
Do I disappoint you, in just being human?
And not one of the elements, that you can light your cigar on
Why does it always have to be fire?
Why does it always have to be brimstone?
Desire
Cool this body down
Do I disappoint you, in just being lonely?
And not one of the elements that you can call your one and only
Why does it always have to be water?
Why does it always have to be holy wine?
Destruction
Of all mankind
And do I disappoint you?
Do I disappoint you in just being like you?
Tired of being the reason the road has a shoulder
And it could be argued, why they all return to the order
Why does it always have to be chaos?
Why does it always have to be wanderlust?
Sensational
I'm gonna smash your bloody skull.
'Cause, baby, no, you can't see inside
No, baby, no, you can't see my soul
Do I disappoint you?
Do I disappoint you?
