Low In High School: What do you think of it?

Just finished first listen. Initial impression: a marked improvement on World Peace Is... in pretty much every respect. Flawless vocals, sense of a coherent band (which I felt the last album lacked), great musically. But also hamstrung by a lot of the lyrics, and Morrissey's attempts at being political in particular. Nearly every song has prosaic, simplistic stuff about how various things are bad. Fair enough, most of the things mentioned are bad, but it's just dull to listen to. But there's also an irritating dripfeed of stuff you can't help thinking is straight off Breitbart. In any case, the whole "I don't really like kings and queens and armies and religions and nuclear bombs etc" thing is pretty comprehensively undermined by finishing with a eulogy to a nation state.

Best song is the one that avoids any of that: Jacky's Only Happy.
 
I think my favorite track is Who Will Save Us From The Police; there's just something about that chorus. Plus the beginning alarm sample reminds me of when Gus was blown up in Breaking Bad.

I have no idea about the relevance of saying Venezuela at the end.

Ahhhh but didn't you know that Jacky (according to the expert on all things Morrissey, Uncle Grumpy) is actually a racist song about Brexit!!! I mean c'mon, it's sooooooo obvious right? :lbf::lbf:

Morrissey was on holiday there last year, whilst observing the landscape he was accosted by several pigs in grey suits who started barking incoherent threats at him. Morrissey, unable to communicate was as a result escorted into an alley and sodomised in his rear cleavage with a rusty baton.

I think it may be "Vini j'suis là". A shoutout to an old friend who could do with a morale boost. Plus, if there are a few lines on an album that are not in English, it means there's no way you can be racist.

From now on every line on every album should be in all languages there are to prevent people feeling discriminated against. And of course it should be in Braille too. Don’t know about people who are deaf or can’t hear the music.

Maybe we should ban all recording of music too just to avoid them feeling discriminated? Why not?

At least they can’t hear that racist, extremist, right wing clown and we can pretend he or the things he sings about don't exist.

Like some idiot dictators in Africa or eastern and middle Asia that claim other sexual preferences than straight don’t exist and it is all an invention of the evil, denigrated western society that is Satan.

Do you really think Morrissey is racist?
 
On first listen I'm (mostly) pleasantly surprised. As many have said, a strong start up to and including STDIB (which I initially hated but now enjoy). From then on, things seem to get a bit messy. IBTL is musically ok, but lyrically awful in my opinion. IYL will maybe grow on me, but TGFTAWWK is just odd. ATYPMFIL is a huge disappointment compared to the live version - a real missed opportunity. Israel sounds beautiful, and I'm fairly clueless about middle east politics so the lyrics are lost on m
STDIB had such heavy rotation on Radio 2 and many seemed to think this would result in decent sales, but after listening to the whole album, I'm not convinced. Musically, there's nothing else that matches that song's style, and I think any casual listeners will find very little to enjoy.
Straight into the top 3 then straight back out again is my prediction, followed by Moz ranting on BMG and another fallout. Round, round, the rhythm of life goes round....
