"Low In High School" review by Andrew Perry (4/5 stars) in Q (Dec. 2017)

'His best since 'Vauxhall and I', and will be known as his Israel album.' Line from 'Israel': "They bitch and moan because they are not like you". Oh dear.

5/10 in Uncut. Said his worst since Kill Uncle. That is more accurate. And btw, as a Jew I find his philosemitism most uncomfortable.

How the f*** can you say something is more accurate if you haven't heard it yourself?

Sorry to break it to you but the Uncut 5/10 was a record review score and nothing else. Tell yourself it’s a disgruntled reviewer with a grudge to bare if it makes you feel better.
Who cares anyway. Create your own review when the album comes out. Yours is the only opinion that really matters.

'Tell yourself it’s a disgruntled reviewer with a grudge to bare...'

don't need to tell myself anything. It's as obvious as snow, as if you didn't know.

yes thank you, my review is the only one that matters to folks here, and I know you just can't wait !

all in good time, all in good time . ;)

The same reviewer gave him 8/10 for World Peace, why wernt you complaining about that? Anyway, i know you're a bit of a looney Moz defender, but you mean no harm. Peace.

didn't read that one, probably gave a good score after feeling guilty
about his character assassination on that one too ! :lbf:

kidding. I usually don't read reviews or care about charts. All that matters is what happens today not yesterday, and I will enjoy those songs as if nothing came before.

Reviews don't matter to me either, and like i said on the other thread, Uncut gave overwhelmingly favourable reviews for YOR and ROTT also. No sour grapes, no conspiracies, no disgruntled reviewers looking to plot Morrisseys downfall, Just an honest review of the album. And If you're content with Morrisseys output over the last 3 years, then i'm happy for you, at least there's people out there still getting some pleasure from his music. But I'll stick to the Smiths and his earlier solo years for now. Though I do believe he has one great album left in him, just not this one.

I thought the Kill Uncle era sound was just thin and watery. It could have been the production as much as the music, but I definitely listen to that era the least. I do realize that it is important, and the people who caught the wave of mania surrounding the Kill Uncle tour will defend it to the death, but the band and songs improved so drastically by the time Arsenal came out, and Vauxhall is pretty much perfect, and the the high water mark for the Boz/Alain/Gary/Spencer band. It's the difference between youthful exuberance versus practiced musicianship.

Watery is the word. It suffered also from being off the back of TQID, Strangeways, Viva Hate and the Kill Uncle follow ups of Your Arsenal and Vauxhall. It’s clearly the weakest of all those albums by some distance and did seem to be a fallow point in his career up until then. Even the b-sides weren’t all that, which was highly unusual at that time. For me it was an enormous let down. Had he waited perhaps and included Pregnant For The Last Time (June ‘91) and My Love Life (September ‘91) then the album would likely have had an entirely more positive impact.

On a brighter note, since the release of World Peace it is no longer his worst album. So that’s good.

Mystified as to how anything is worse than the filth that is Quarry. Even if you believe that is an acceptable offering, how is World Peace worse than Years of Refusal or even ROTT?

World Peace>KillUncle>ROTT/YOR>Quarry

...Btw, I think Spent The Day In Bed is
his all-time worst single. I wish he’d never written, recorded or released it. Truly dire.

erhhhh....Roy's Keen was released as a single[/QUOTE]

....and I’d listen to Roy’s Keen over STDIB, any day of the week. At least it’s catchy & funny.

"Israel" looks like it's going to be a hoot. Golda Meir, with her five o'clock shadow, will be the cover star of that single. Morrissey is a Freemason! He's been doing "the hidden hand" Napoleon pose since The Smiffs. I didn't want Moz to crash and burn like SO many others, but it's coming.

In 20-25 years when the revisionist history comes in I suspect that World Peace and Low In High School will be rated much more highly than they are now (I'm assuming that this album won't receive too much glowing critical praise.)

In one word, no :)

Haven't you read the reviews of World Peace at the time? It was heralded as a 5 star record.
Retrospectively, it is his weakest record, the opening track is such a mess. An artist can't produce an album that stands the test of time if he's not surrounded by the best musicians available in the circuit. Manzur doesn't have the same musical culture as Boz.

And now, shallow lyrics in Spanish like "no Patron" over a sub-standard tune don't help. Why translating sentences in Spanish, and why not in French, In Deutch or in Japanese ?
The edges are no longer parallel

Not a fan of the track World Peace but it is better than America is Not the World.

I am with you. Quarry didn't just mad me sad but also angry how couldn't anyone hear the dated key sounds, not to mention Morrissey doing a Dido song!!?

No, you are right of course but that is a very high up standard to held up before you even start to listen. I think it is because of that, the music of The Smiths and Moz doing that in the past is reason many fans, but not all start comparing and feel dissapointed.
Nothing can ever be that great again.

That's essentially all I've been getting at

Morrissey's rockabilly phase was the peak of his solo years. He followed it up with still more rockabilly sounds on Vauxhall & I. These were his two most heralded albums. Since then, it's been all down hill.

After that, Morrissey seemed to fail to establish a distinctive musical identity like he had with Stephen Street, and that he began having with Boz and Alain. Since Vauxhall, his sound became this plodding hodge-podge of pub rock, and random genre dabbling that I guess was meant to give the impression that he was broadening his palette, but comes across as cliched, and aimless.

What is remarkable is that it took him this long to show any real advancement in his sound. Even on the singles between Years of Refusal and World Peace, he seemed to be delve back into the sludge rock sound. That's How People Grow Up is hands down one of the worst songs he has ever released.

Now he has a more interesting sound, but the lyrical content has become wonky, and uninspired.

Your Arsenal was truly one of his best albums. The rockabilly playfulness on stage is exactly what the genre is about. If only the band members had anything resembling that kind of spirit now.

Now, Boz looks like a stage-float character strumming robotically while glaring at the audience like he can't stand them. Jesse looks like a guy playing air-guitar at the wrong concert.

The rest are great musicians, but they're basically just a rent-a-band. The Lads started out as a unit, and now it's become a lottery of session musicians who are pulling everything in to too many different directions.

In the end, it's a rarity that any artist can maintain consistency over so many albums. It's just not supposed to happen. Pop artists are designed to sparkle and fade rather swiftly. In all honesty, how many more Morrissey songs do we really need? I don't really expect him top surprise me at this point.

I think this is quite honest. All of it. It's kind of the way with artists of his age, that band members come and go, until their "sound" is just diluted and off, and they don't know where to go with the lyrics, so they just retread old songs, or casually toss off attempts at new ones.

There's always talk about Moz not being a "legacy act" but really, is that such a terrible thing? Psychedelic Furs have been touring consistently forever, without writing a new song, and when I saw the Cure last year, everybody nodded politely to their later era stuff, and checked their phones during the two new numbers.
If I end up going to see Morrissey on this tour, I'll spend the day in the lobby during spent the day in bed.

Oh yes, sure.
But just to take another example then Moz or The Smiths, just listened and watched the video of Madness, "It Must Be Love" posted in the "what songs you're listening to ?" thread by IR.
My heart jumped up and it is the music I love and I am afraid I can't relate to much of the music of today.
Searching but not finding. Of course it's age and maybe nostalgia.
I've stumbled across a few new bands that give me that frisson, but it's usually catching them as openers, like Twilight Sad, who I rate very highly- or by going on youtube and just clicking random stuff that pops up alongside the music I like. Do that a few times, and it basically works like Pandora, providing "if you like ____, you might like ____."

its almost as if Morrissey has done nothing good in the last twenty years.for me his albums are mostly decent with a few duffers, certainly not as bad as some on here are making out.

World Peace>KillUncle>ROTT/YOR>Quarry

If you cannot listen to First Of The Gang To Die or Come Back To Camden and recognise them as truly outstanding late Morrissey compositions I’m not sure what I can suggest short of a chimney sweep to the ears.

Quarry is his last great album. Even after Low In High School is released I suspect that will still be the case.
