I was sure to arrive early so as not to miss Tom Jones, and he did not disappoint. His voice was strong & had great range. He did a variety of songs - covers of Tom Waits, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Bond 'Thunderball' and of course 'It's Not Unusual', which he noted was his first hit single released 50 years ago this November. He seemed as others mentioned to thoroughly enjoy himself, describing Morrissey as a 'fellow countryman' before quickly clarifying that he is Welsh, and also that Morrissey has Irish heritage. [My husband's mum was from Cardiff so I'm already well-heeled on the Welsh thing]. He also made a few self-depricating jokes, 'Don't do anything I wouldn't do, which gives you a broad range... ' I watched carefully from my perch up high in the concourse and didn't see one pair of panties flung on stage, and was a little disappointed by that, especially considering Morrissey had several bras hurled at him during his set. Tom Jones classed up the joint with a large, somewhat worn looking persian rug in the center of the stage, which was rolled up and carried away before Morrissey came out.

Morrissey's set was great and started with a bang, as soon as he set into Hand In Glove the floor crowd was like a sea pushing forward, surreal to watch the whole crowd shrink itself to 1/2 it's size as everyone pushed forward towards the stage. I liked Bullfighter especially with it's cheeky 'Lonely Bull' horn intro. My eyes glazed over a bit during WPINOYB, just because political rants aren't my favorite, but the song was saved at the end when Moz ordered 'Get your FAT. ASS. BACK. to the ghetto!' Everything got silly during First of the Gang To Die, 'You have never been in love until you've seen my ASS reflect in the reservoir', and towards the end he babbled through 1/2 of one song as he shook hands with people in the front row. A few squandered opportunities by front row fans handed the microphone, I always hope to hear something amusing and original but people usually only say 'I love you, Morrissey'. My suggestion to those of you planning to be at that front rail, have something really good to say all thought out! :) Overall I had a great time, Morrissey sounded great even though the sound seemed off too me (treble too high), which brings me to my one & only complaint..

..the Los Angeles Sports Arena is a DUMP! When it comes to historic preservation I am the first one there, but they need to take a wrecking ball to this place. The acoustics were terrible, the vinyl seats were horrid, and to add insult to injury they only serve Coors Light at $10/pint. I hope it's true Morrissey never plays the same venue twice because I don't ever want to go back to that place.

But was it meat free that is the question

Morrissey's biggest fan base, by a MILE, is Los Angeles. More so even that London or Manchester. They'll always get his best show! Although, I cannot believe that on this tour he played "TO GIVE (THE REASON I LIVE)" yet again! Are there really people out there thinking
"Rather than something like Unloveable or Jack the Ripper, forget those, I want to hear his cover of To Give (The Reason I Live)!!!"

You moron, mamchester and London are always rough and tumble affairs, Dublin as well. LA is about money not his heart. LA crowdd are stupid, he knows he can do what he likes and they will still like it - look at last year's Staples and HH gigs.
He knows in England and Ireland he has to do good and show and they arent as easily pleased. It's not about a cult or being cool there

I don't get all the aggression. You think Morrissey wants that? I was in the pit and could barely move and got scratched by some so called man for no reason. We all came to see him and all you people acting like jerks is disgusting.

I like to think of it as the ultimate fan homage to Morrissey's first band. That's how hardcore a fan I am, none of this "Whaaaaa, I was at the Hacienda show..." My face takes the concrete I'm so f***ing dedicated. :p

Oh my freaking god, CG? Are you okay?

Thanks for the review! Bras eh?

I had to pee twice during his set and walked to the restrooms to see tons and tons and tons of people hanging out in the hallways looking completely bored out of their minds (There were a lot of people on the GA floor sitting down with the same tired expressions on their faces near the FOH board).

I'll be the first here to say that his current set works terrifically in a small club (as I was at the Santa Ana show and can attest to how fun that was) but gets lost in translation in a large venue/arena setting. There is a HUUUUUUGE back catalog of great songs (smiths and solo) to pull from that could set that venue (or any place no matter what the size) on fire and make the expensive ticket totally worth the cost, but last night seemed to fall very short...

Had he played songs with the same consistency and energy as his Hollywood Bowl 07' setlist, last night would have been the best show you'd seen this year by far. He looks better than he has in a long while and is singing better, but his select choice of material is not spectacular and does not compliment his stage presence. (Im not a casual fan unfamiliar with what was played at all either, it's just obvious that aside from that the fans at the barricade, 85% of what is played is very unknown to the rest of the crowd)

It is almost like he is rearranging a lot of his songs (mellowed down) for a lounge like performances in the future (and with Tom Jones on the bill it's like he kind of is introducing that vibe to his concerts) perhaps Moz plans to do a casino residency when he is a bit older? Can't blame him, those pay well and the overhead is considerably lower seeing as there is very little travel costs.

I was hoping for his big comeback tour he would be pulling out all the stops and really working the stage and making it his best of shows since 04' tour which totally relit a lot of fans interest. He could have made last night truly amazing instead of just kind of an interesting place to be on a Saturday night.

I also hope that when he returns to the LA market again whether it be a large, mid or small venue, he has a setlist that blows fans minds and not just the overnight city to city camp for days fans.

Not a hater in the slightest, just calling it like I see it. Very glad Morrissey appears to be in good health and thats what's really important, much love dude.

I took my mom as a mother's day gift and MORRISSEY was awesome last night and my mom loved it!. The crowd was a little too insane! (Pushing and shoving during slow songs?!) But i'd personally like to say SCREW THAT GUY DOUGLAS! First he cuts in line while were queing, then during the show because he HAS to be in the front at every show.. trys to push his way through this little girl AND my mom (we were seperate but i could see her) so my mom pushed him back a couple times and i pushed him back and yelled "GET THE f*** BACK AND RELAX, THATS MY MOM, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE FRONT!" Other than that, i had an amazing time and jumped over the barrier again..but Morrissey didn't notice me this time.

You seem to be under some false impressions. This is not a site about Morrissey. It is a site about a handful of anonymous posters and their inter-personal disputes that are too self-referntial for anyone who only posts here causally to follow and consists mostly of irrelevant memes, video clips, and bizarrely unfunny jokes.

I really wish Dave would change the name. This site keeps getting cited in news sources as being Morrissey, sometimes with the implication that it is an official source of information and we really should clear up confusion about these sorts of matters.

Not only is it a Morrissey site, it's the Morrissey site.

The fact Morrissey gets so much shit here reflects on him, his recent material, but mostly his almost ineffable idiocy on a broad range of subjects of which he patently knows little.

If he had just stopped producing decent material people would have shrugged and lost interest, like hundreds of artists before him. His decision to go out of his way to offend people in an effort to remain in the public eye has led to the current situation. It's entirely of his own making, and it is therefore entirely valid to challenge his views, whatever he may think.

That said I still hope the new album will be a success, despite the lukewarm reaction to the three new songs. I am slightly mystified as to why he is only putting three into the setlist so far. You'd surely expect perhaps four or five so close to the release date. Perhaps he is keeping his powder dry.

I haven't seen any of the shows in person tet( my tickets are for June), but does anyone have a sense that he's simply not as dramatic and energetic as previous tours? I could totally be misinterpreting based on watching YouTube videos alone, but it seems that he isn't lying on the floor, shirt tossing, grabbing himself in that fashion like he did as recently as last year. I really hope this isn't a sign of him becoming a Vegas lounge act as suggested above.

What about the merch ? Was there any home-coming one offs ?
L A 69ers hoods , Personal shoppers of the world unite, London is dead this is L A,
Oh rubbish W P I N O Y B, We hate why solo is successful, hulmasexualist, L A school of hard-cocks ?

I bet he did To Give not so much for us but for Tom Jones.

Give him a break - the guy is getting older. Every tour the guy moves a bit slower, and these days a whip of the microphone cord is he most action you are likely to get. The days of him rolling around the floor I think are pretty much over, as he'd need someone to help him back up again.

Damn, this place really has become thoroughly weird. I feel like there was a time when the news value offset the derangement and vitriol of the commentary, but now the obsession, pettiness and bitter loathing have completely overwhelmed the whole.

Look at any news item and a solid two-thirds is sure to be off-topic pejorative bile, with the same circle of micro-monomaniacal loons trading increasingly hysterical insults.

Moz just played a huge LA show with Tom Jones in support, singing Smiths songs, old songs, new songs - is no one around here actually pleased with that...?

Are you? Because you don't actually discuss the concert or Tom Jones. Feel free to do so
