It was actually the other way around. The organizers of the Lokerse Feesten proposed not to serve meat on the evening of his performance, in order to convince Morrissey to come to Lokeren - and it worked.

There are people who do not follow the tour on the internet. I spoke to a lovely Belgian man and his wife or whatever it was and he had been a huge Smiths fan until Morrissey's release of Viva Hate and he was very much looking forward to Morrissey coming on stage, got his quiff all ready and such, his wife coloured her hair especially for Morrissey ;), but I was the one who updated him on what Morrissey currently plays. He named numerous of his songs, which I reckon are his favourites, and I told him that yes, no, sometimes they get played. He could sing along to the songs so well that I told him during I Know It's Over that he could well become a Morrissey impersonator. Somehow they even looked like brothers. He was completely out of touch with current Morrissey and this was Morrissey's chance to get him on board again.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write about your experience!
(I only quoted part of it, enough so you know that I mean you). It was very enjoyable to read your post, it really made me feel the atmosphere at the concert, with the rain & everything.
I quite like the idea of Morrissey & other musicians on the stage wearing rain jackets! It would give the whole thing a very different atmosphere, I suppose - more like a camping holiday feeling maybe...or at least it would make one feel more that we are all the same in the rain...I think it would be fun. :)
Sorry that you were silenced by that guy's look at you. You sound like a very nice person & you should have had all the fun you could have. But it sounds like you had a great time, anyway. :)

okey, thanks for the info, there you have it, never completly trust the newsreports. however it's still a sad thing that this was what convinced him. I hope for all the fans that were pressent that it was a good experience,

that morrissey is not funny anymore,

the start was fantastic but after that it became clear that the once angry young man is now simply an old nagging man: truly disappointing.

funny that people notice and remember the lyric changes..... i hope some people start to understand what he is singing about!!!! Singing along with meat is murder and than having a burger..... i can't understand.

GO VEGAN

Saw it yesterday... played the gig in 'safe mode'... no risks at all... thumbs up for the band, who played as hell.

Too many slow numbers, little 'rock' ones.

Thanks for the details of what he said!

Usual intro movies, in the same order as Stoke (for example). Operation drum intro did seem to last quite long. Anticipation...
Oh, by the way, I suddenly got the Stoke reference to "Margaret Row's??? house". It's a quote from 'Queenie's Castle'.... Look it up.

"Are you ready to take a risk?"
I WANT THE ONE I CAN'T HAVE
"thank you"
FIRST OF THE GANG TO DIE "[during intro to the song:] Julia, nobody knows, nobody knows"
"thank you. thank you."
YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME, FATTY (tambourine used)
"Do you have any objections? I shall give you time. You'll think of some."
YOU HAVE KILLED ME (lyric change: "what the hell is YOUR life for" & "I forgive you, because the night is made for lovers", "thank you")
"oh, the weather, oh, the weather, oh, the weather - what happened"
*** may I add at this point his voice was sometimes ever so slightly overstretched. perhaps the festival sound. perhaps not. ***
THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT
EVERYDAY IS LIKE SUNDAY ("on your face. on MY face? - on your FACE FACE FACE" - always a highlight!)
[over the outro to EVERYDAY: "all my life is buried here - bleak earth upon it" - an Oscar Wilde quote from his poem Requiescat]
"thank you - urgh urgh"
ALMA MATTERS [lyric change second chorus: "to someone, somewhere - in Antwerp, I DON'T KNOW"] mmm... what did he mean???
*** may I add at his point that he really, REALLY seemed into enunciating each word very clearly - you know what I mean - he did ***
ONE DAY GOODBYE WILL BE FAREWELL ["so somebody grab me while there's still time."]
"thank you. chanson Scandinavia."
SCANDINAVIA
SATELLITE OF LOVE [he still CANNOT STAND the tv]
band introductions: "Il y a Boz Boorer. Il y a Solomon Walker. Playing the drums - the drums! - is Matthew Walker. Playing the piano is Gustavo Manzur. And standing here is Jesse Tobi--i-i-i Jesse Tobias. Yes, you're very kind. [pretends to sneeze] Hatchoo."

MEAT IS MURDER [Because this was a festival gig, we got to see the video's properly on the festival screens by the side of the stage - very powerful.]
(lyric change: "The meat in your GREAT BIG FAT MOUTH IS MURDER" and instead of 'how animals die' "but - do you care, do you care, do you care?"]
"Thank you. For those of you who listened - thank you."
SPEEDWAY [very long break mid-s0ng again]
[I noticed him mouthing or gesturing the next song to the band - possibly dropping one...?]
"Time's tide will smother you."
IRISH BLOOD, ENGLISH HEART
"God bless you."

1 hour 6 minutes. No encore. Exit: 'Death' (Klaus Nomi)

1 shirt change (none thrown) - from pink to sparkly red after Meat Is Murder.

Best performance ever.
I also enjoyed this review, and I too felt as if I were at the concert, which is the main reason I read these posts. I live in the states and doubt I'll ever to be lucky enough to hear Morrissey in concert. If I did I sure as heck would not complain about the set or the amount of time he sang, because I realize, all bands have the same, basic set for each show because it's easier for the performer and band and is arranged ahead of time. You also have to realize that accoustics in an open festival is way different than inside a hall, and you have to take that into account also. Not to mention that you also have different fans at each show and if you're unlucky, one of them can wreck your experience too. As for the length of the concert, this also has varibles such as what I encountered one time when I attended the local, yearly, outdoor festival we have called Summerfest, I had already listened to the opening bands and by the time the main band performed, they played for less than an hour and we all understood, it was 90+F, where we the audience sat, we at least had some breeze, the bands played up front in a sheltered, covered area, good if it rained, but in the heat, and with the stage lights it was even warmer for them and they were actually getting ill from it. This was announced to us, but since a few fans had already passed out from the heat we weren't too surprised, and we were happy to hear what they did play for us. So if it had been a Morrissey concert, I'd of been happy with an hour or less concert.

Wow! This is great!!! One thing though, after Meat is Murder I thought he said, 'For both (possibly 'the two of you') of you who listened, thank you.' Or something like that implying that most people were probably not recieving the message. Also, he changed 'a death for no reason' to 'kill, eat, kill, eat', didn't he?

Loved the gig, but I always prefer Morrissey in a smaller venue. Festivals aren't the way he was meant to be appreciated. I got the feeling he wasn't exactly extatic about the gig himself either. Still, you know, it was Morrissey, so I went home a happy happy girl.

If someone said that this was the performance ever, you've never seen any other show. Lame and dull. Where oh where has Morrissey gone?
