I am not trying to take over Bluenose's mantle as the resident T.V ( that's television as opposed to transvestite:) critic but it might be of interest of some to know that one of the greatest British films of all time makes a welcome return to our screens tonight.

Ken Loach's 1969 masterpiece "Kes".Watch it and remind yourself what a powerful medium film can be and remind yourself that there is more to the art of film-making than the pap that we are force-fed from Hollywood.Enjoy.

...and remember how good British films COULD be. It hasn't always been Mockney gangster flicks, Merchant Ivory and "Two Notting Weddings Actually" etc.

It's a top watch - Brian Glover is a star. The only drawback I find is that my mind keeps prodding me and whispering, "Ivy Tilsley" in my ear.

Hee hee!! I know what you mean

I like Ivy though....we had similar drinking patterns!

I find it quite sad that " Lock,Stock and two Smoking Barrels" is held up as an example of modern British cinema. It is so bad.

Kes is indeed a fine film, one of my favourites.

Don't you just feel so sorry for the little boy who gets caned by the headmaster when all he is doing is delivering a note from his teacher.

Yes! It's so unjust! But that scene, where they're all standing about trying not to snigger while the headmaster is giving his speech, is so evocative of my own scrapes as a lad. Brings back memories.

HAHA I was once given a weeks detention when I was at Junior school, and had to stand in the same cold corridor every lunchtime for the week. When the headmaster asked me why I was there, he went to check my story with the teacher who had given me the weeks detention in the first place. She had forgotten about it and denied all knowledge, the headmaster then gave me six of the best for lying. Miserable days indeed.

Johnny, you could NEVER compete with my geeky, anorak interest in fillums
Has anyone else noticed the irony of it being scheduled after 'Bo Selecta!'?
