Nah, Alain Whyte ain't calling Johnny a mistake. He's giving a plug to a new single by Clear titled "Johnny Marr Was A Mistake."

See: http://www.geocities.com/alain_whyte/clear.html

And the song intends it as a compliment:

Regarding the controversial title, Invisible Hands Music explains, "The song is about how much crap major record labels release, and that the corporate music industry basically exists to squash real talent in favour of artists with no agenda or creativity; and that allowing a band like the Smiths through was an anomoly- Johnny Marr was a mistake."

Re: Is the group Clear named after Marr's Clear Studios in Bowdon Altrincham??

I went through his whole site the other day and I wondered the same thing.
