Johnny Marr+The Healers – Boomslang (2024)

"Boomslang is the sound of a man unfettered by any desire to please anyone other than himself and, on those terms, it’s a quiet victory for being able to wake up in the mirror and remember exactly who you are."

Ya better be mindful of ya
maneuverin' Son.
Ya get to mixin' with that
boo hickey and ya gonna
end up gettin' boomslanged.

"A must for any vinyl collector and everyone’s streaming service just got a little better!"

Better get the penicillin.
Went and caught'em a case
of that boomslang.

"The album has already received critical acclaim, with CLASH highlighting its “delicious fusion of Eastern-sounding riffs, heavy psychedelic rhythms, and hypnotic beats”. Record Collector described the album, “cosmic,” while Classic Pop praised the “adventurousness that has become his solo trademark” and Uncut Magazine tipped the unheard Boomslang recordings on the deluxe 2LP edition, “sublime”.

When he contracted boomslang, there
weren't a thing we could do.
Thanks to the assistance of Dr. Kevorkian,
he was spared to much pain.
We had no sentimental or ethical issues
with burning his body.
It was a matter of public safety.

Interesting to see the positive reviews on this reissue.
It didn’t resonate with me at the time, but I’ll give it another listen.

Makes me wonder how this new generation of music journalists would have reacted to a reissue of YATQ if things had gone according to plan.

"In hindsight, it sounds much closer to works like Fever Dreams or Call The Comet than anything else found in Marr's discography (solo or otherwise): no particular spectacular moves with the six strings, depth and atmosphere as the cornerstones of an architecture that aims at mysticism, a result surprisingly less demanding than its own premises (it runs about 50 minutes but seems less).

It's space rock , if we want to give it a label, that plays in search of a hypnotic effect, sometimes even with particular insistence ( You Are The Magic ), that can take off ( Bangin' On ) or bring a bit of tasty glam into the mix ( The Last Ride ).

Boomslang still retains its charm as a moment of transition that has proved decisive."
