The flowers in the sexual context have had a different meaning than the one made up above.

I agree. Anyway, there is not only one meaning and everyone is free to find his own interpretation even if it's different from the one of the author.
 
Very interesting, in ancient rome figs represented female genitalia I can't remember what was representative for the Greeks.

I thought the flower was representing the prisoners (with the tatoo on his arm) burgeoning sexuality and his role as the passive sexual partner, a role he seems to take on throughout the film, but of course you're right it's open to interpretation.

The title of this thread always puts "Jean Genie" in my head.

I need to read some Genet one day.

**And not to mix up too many French authors here, but I've been very slowly reading Camus' "The Rebel - An Essay on Man in Revolt" and yowsa, quite a few parallels with some of the themes in Refusal.
