Is this ebay item a real promo or fake?

There is an item on ebay that this guy is selling. He says he did not ever see one on ebay before yet he sold one of them last year on ebay. It looks like a fake promo. How could it be real as the second disc has numerous bands covering the smiths and they are all on different record labels. Not on Universal music which he claims this promo came from. Anyone please tell me if this item is a real promo and tell me where it is listed as one online.
The item number is: 290278849020

Universal Music Publishing. They control the publishing rights to The Smiths.

Why is it always the low post number or non-collector members sounding the fake alarm bells?

I've brought a copy earlier this year and I've seen about four appear on e-bay since. From what I can gather it's for radio/tv promotional use. They are 'pressed' cds and not cd-r's and a really nice item, but the price they fetch varies enormously. There is also a Joy Division version out there as well which I owned for a day before posting it off to a collector in the States.

This is a promo for the band's publishing company, not their label. These things are sent to ad agencies amongst other places. If a song is used in an ad (or in a film, or for some event, etc), the artist (and the publishing company) get royalties. The cover versions are included because if they are used, the songwriters still get royalties.

This looks like another publishing promo CD - at $150 it's too rich for me - but others might be interested http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Smiths-pu...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:10|39:1|240:1318

If they are used for internal purposes to get Smiths' songs used in adverts...they don't seem very successful as I can't remember any advert featuring Smiths songs - covers or originals (plenty of trailers for BBC shows, but no real adverts).

I think they used How Soon Is Now for a Nissan commercial here in the US a number of years ago at least.

(could be wrong on the song and the car company but hey... ;) )

As others have said it's a Universal Publishing promo and very similar to the Joy Division one from couple of years back. Very few will be in circulation.
