While I appreciate their cultural relevance and adore some of their songs I find them over-rated and a bit outdated.

Also to thier credit or not I don't really regard them as punk. They're beyond that. Whether thats in a good or bad way I honestly couldn't say.

Your comment on The Jam shows you're just nit-picking. I know full well "Snap!" is a compilation. I want to hear those songs again as if I had never heard them before, which I believe was the point of the question. I own all The Jam albums and in another thread listed "Sound Affects" as one of my favorite albums of all time. Nice try though.

I think The Clash were the first band I ever saw live. I was just a kid, and they were on a stadium tour with The Who (if memory serves). The Clash in a stadium were pretty pointless, but I'm glad I was there.

I've just never gotten beyond how relentlessly ugly their music was. And proudly so. Ugly music made by three ugly men ~ plus the most beautiful punk in christendom (Simonon). Worshipped by young ugly men, now old and tedious ugly men, boring the tits off the rest of us about Saint Joe. Strummer and Jones' voices are hideous, the music is as pretty as pissed on concrete. I appreciate that at the time such brutality was completely necessary but that doesn't mean that listening to it thirty years on has to be anything other than torture.

Yes, that's it in a nutshell. The Clash were sonically harsh, but I think time has been kind to them, as it is kind to all really beautiful things.

The occasional Clash song on the radio these days sounds undeniably, unpleasantly real - like choking cigarette smoke, four-track analog mixers and that hand-painted leather jacket so caked with filth that it stood on it's own.

It's one of the early scenes, I believe where Ed Norton is talking about how dull and over-commodified his life is. He's bored half to death watching TV on his sofa.

The Clash was the only band that mattered in the late 70s early 80s. Ian Curtis and Joy Division could have been, The Ramones/Pistols were originally ugly, but The Clash were simply the best. Joe Strummer is a God, before and after the band broke up. A true spirit. The next band to make such an impact in the music scene after them was Nirvana. Morrissey actually answered a newspaper add to be their frontman!! Can you imagine....

Ah Wormy...Yes, the Pixies were very good as well, but Mudhoney is who Nirvana ripped off. Regardless of originality, these two bands changed what music sounded like on the alternative radio. Before Nirvana stardom, you had big hair bands dominating the airwaves in the US. Nirvana squashed that. They may not have been the original, but they were the ones who changed the mood, not the Pixies.

The first time I heard the Clash was in 1981 I was in college at Adelphi University on Long Island and one night I went down to this show in Manhattan--one of Kurtis Blows hip hip-hop package shows. The crowd was rough People from different camps were there--the hip-hop people and the punk-rock people. They even started throwing tomatoes at Kurtis so that's they type of wild kids who were there. But the Clash completely broke it that night it was an awakening for a New York cat like myself.

As I delved more into the music scene, I started learning about how the kids across the water in England were rebelling against the queen and the aristocracy Around the same time. Bill Stepheny a friend of mine from Adelphi and one of the original members of Public Enemy, started playing the Clash's records on his hip-hop radio show which opened up a lot of peoples minds He would reach into the Clash's catalogue as well as the Sex Pistols, and make those kinds of songs work in the context of a hip-hop show He was instrumental in exposing a lot of hip hop cats to what the Clash were doing.​

Kurt Cobain even admitted to ripping of Pixies. They definitely did rip off Pixies, badly too!

Edit: Also, in my opinion, the only reason Nirvana are so famous and "influential" still is because Cobain killed himself.

Did I really twist the meaning of your posts out of all recognition? Really? Perhaps I did, I'm not sure. I mean, who could possibly have deduced that you might be a racist prick from the fact that, of the thousands of bands you might've chosen to see live if you'd had the opportunity, you chose white supremacist combo, Skrewdriver, above all others (a band whose singer unabashedly spewed race hate, denounced state policy as a conspiracy of Jewry and longed for "ethnic purity" in Britain)? Who could have drawn the conclusion - because you wanted to see them whip up their audience into an "atmosphere of hatred and anger" against non-white people (and "communists" and homosexuals) - that you felt any kind of sympathy with the sentiments they expressed?

And, by coincidence, you hate The Clash.
