Oh, I've always thought this song had a distinctly gay theme. Especially the chorus, "I love you... and is it really so strange?" Every gay person can relate to that sentiment.

It's so hard to choose his most "gay" song as almost every song has its gay moments, but the song that I can relate to most vividly as a gay person is "I Am Hated For Loving". Sums it all up in the title, doesn't he?

Pretty solid interpretation, except for the "tiny house" bit which I don't really buy.

However, the words are open-ended and might just as likely be a "straight" song. I don't think it's concealing anything. As I hear it, the song is sort of a happy admission of confusion. The "you" he addresses is a lover but, at the same time, the abstract "you" or "they" who accuse him of having too much caffeine in his bloodstream in "A Rush And A PusH", maybe they're the tired family in "London". In any case, to me the song is about the joy of not being settled in life. Still figuring it out. My inner ear hears the sweet sounds of The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" behind Morrissey's vocals: "I'm about to lose control/And I think I like it!"

i state in my thread/ i did make it clear that its a DIFFERENT! "lonely and lost " feEeing that straight people do feel -especially at the moment when they realise that they are gay-as a teenager/and or later
living in a small town and do have the feeling that you are the only gay person within 100 kilometers and have no idea where to find some people like you ( at a time where the internet was not as widespread as now (mid/ate 90ties)

I absolutely agree with these. "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" is a gay anthem. Also, "I Know It's Over": "Love is natural and real but not for such as you and I, my love". So true.

Not in the same way at all. I mean, nobody thinks it's strange for a man to love a woman or for a woman to love a man... but many people think it's strange for two people of the same sex to fall in love and share a life together.
